Khang42Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into upgrading my Ikea Platsa system and considering how to enhance it with LED lighting solutions that are both practical and visually appealing. My question is: Are there specific LED lighting systems or solutions that work particularly well with the modular and minimalist design of Ikea PLATSA?
I am especially interested in aspects such as easy installation, appropriate size, harmonious color temperature, and a clean integration without visible cables or unattractive mounts. It would also be helpful to hear if anyone has experience with certain brands or DIY solutions that fit well with PLATSA modules—whether for open shelving units, closed cabinets, or display cases.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Oh, this is a great topic! A few months ago, I got exactly this kind of lighting for my PLATSA system and I’m really impressed! 😄
What I recommend are compact LED strips with warm white light that can be attached directly to the inside of the modules using 3M adhesive tape. This way, the cables are hardly visible, and the light color is pleasant—neither too cold nor too harsh. There are also LED systems with remote controls, which make operation really easy.
A tip from me: The IKEA-branded LED spotlights are nice but somewhat expensive and not specifically designed for PLATSA. You can get much better value with brands like “LIFX” or “Philips Hue” if you want smart lighting. Just try it out and enhance the room with light—it’s really fun!

What I can recommend most of all are compact LED strips with warm white lightThat sounds really interesting! I’m also considering making my PLATSA feel a bit more homely, especially to create a cozy atmosphere. However, I’m concerned that cable management for LED strips can quickly look messy, especially with the modular nature of PLATSA.
How did you solve this? Do you use specific channels or system solutions to ensure the LEDs are seamlessly integrated? I assume it would be a shame if the cables were visible or came loose. I like the idea that lighting is not only functional but also conveys emotion. It definitely makes the room feel much better.

Are there any special LED lighting systems or solutions that work particularly well with the modular and minimalist designs of Ikea PLATSA?Hey, that’s already a very well thought-out question! 😎 In my opinion, "cabinet interior lighting" works really well with PLATSA – small LED panels or spotlights that can be discreetly mounted inside the cabinet.
- Most people use battery-powered or USB LEDs, which are very flexible.
- My personal favorite is dimmable LED strips, which can be easily attached with adhesive pads and still look very elegant.
A cool idea is to use colored LEDs if you want to brighten up the space or create a certain mood. However, warm tones usually look best with the white or light surfaces of PLATSA.
A small tip: Make sure to have enough brightness, especially if you’re using closed modules, otherwise the lighting won’t be very effective.

However, I’m concerned that cable management for LED strips can quickly look messyThat’s an important point. I faced a similar situation and chose slim-profile LED strips that fit very well along the edges of the PLATSA shelves.
For cable management, I recommend:
- Plastic cable channels that can be easily mounted on the back of the units
- Extension cables or flexible connectors to allow individual adjustment for each module
- If possible, consider battery-powered solutions or rechargeable batteries to avoid visible cables altogether
Also, pay attention to the power supply, which ideally should not be prominent – a central power source nearby is best.
In general, I also suggest using LED lighting with low heat emission to prevent damage to the furniture materials.
