ᐅ Are there different types of drawer slides for Ikea Brimnes drawers?

Dwight1Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Brimnes dresser set from Ikea and noticed that the drawer slides don’t all feel quite the same. I’m specifically interested in whether there are different versions of the drawer slides used in Ikea’s Brimnes series, for example regarding quality, mechanism, or durability.
Does anyone know if Ikea uses various types of drawer slides for Brimnes furniture, possibly depending on the production period, region, or model version? Or are all the drawer slides in Brimnes really identical?
I’m asking because I’m considering upgrading to higher-quality drawer slides, but before doing so, I want to understand if that is actually necessary or worthwhile.
Thanks for your experiences and insights!

Regarding the question about differences in the drawer runners of the Ikea Brimnes:
According to documentation and user reports, Ikea mainly uses simple ball-bearing slides for Brimnes drawers. These are functionally adequate but not particularly durable.
There are reports that models from different production batches vary slightly, usually in the material thickness or coating of the runners. However, these are not fundamentally different systems, just minor adjustments.
If you want long-lasting comfort and higher load capacity, metal full-extension runners with a soft-close function are a reasonable upgrade. In the original condition, Ikea does not offer any variants for Brimnes beyond these standard runners.
In short: there are different types, but only marginal changes, no completely different systems.

Regarding the differences in Ikea Brimnes drawer slides, here is a brief overview:
- Ikea Brimnes usually uses simple metal ball-bearing slides with plastic runners.
- These are functional but not designed for durability or particularly smooth operation.
- Variations can occur due to production batches, with slight changes in the material thickness of the slides, but this has little impact on functionality.
- Attention should be paid to the installation dimensions if you plan to upgrade to higher-quality full-extension slides.
- Common mistakes during upgrades include incorrect lengths or too few mounting points, which can compromise stability.
In summary: there are minor differences in workmanship, but no fundamentally different sliding system. For improvement, it is recommended to switch to a standard full-extension slide adapted to the Brimnes dimensions.

I understand your concerns about the quality of the Brimnes drawer slides. I felt the same way when using the drawers daily and noticed they don’t feel particularly sturdy.
I can confirm this; I own two Brimnes dressers from different purchase years, and the older one has slightly more robust slides. The newer ones seem a bit thinner, which becomes noticeable with frequent use.
I have since replaced the slides with sturdier full-extension drawer slides. This makes a noticeable difference in both usability and durability.
If long-term use is your priority, I think the effort is worthwhile, although the original slides are sufficient for normal household use.
