ᐅ Are there BILLY shelves available with a particularly durable surface finish?

waltonHello everyone,
I’m considering getting a BILLY bookcase from IKEA, but I have a specific requirement: Are there BILLY bookcases with particularly durable or hard-wearing surfaces?
I need the bookcase for an environment where it will be subject to more wear and tear – for example, from frequent placement of items or occasional bumps. The standard surface is rather thin and prone to scratches or wear, so I’m wondering if there are laminated versions or ones with some kind of protective coating that are especially long-lasting.
Alternatively, does anyone have experience with special surface treatments for BILLY bookcases (e.g., films, varnishes, or alternative materials) that can be obtained directly from IKEA or added on effectively?
I’m grateful for any advice, especially if someone has a similar use case and can share tips on care or modifications!

Hello Walton,
I heard from a friend that some BILLY shelves are available with a more durable surface, but not directly from IKEA as a standard product. Usually, the surface is made of melamine-coated particleboard, which is quite sturdy, but with heavy use and scratches, it can still show wear relatively quickly.
If you want something more heavy-duty, one option is to apply clear, self-adhesive protective films to the shelves – this makes the surface much more resistant to scratches and moisture. You can still see the wood look through it, and if you want, you can even replace the film fairly easily.
Personally, I think it’s a neat solution because it doesn’t require changing the furniture completely. And hey, who says a BILLY can’t take a bit of rough use? 😄

Hello Walton,
to answer your question directly, IKEA does not offer BILLY shelves with specially reinforced or extra durable surfaces compared to the standard versions. The BILLY series is mainly made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface, which generally provides a good base for everyday use but does not have an industrial or extremely resistant wear layer.
This means the surface is relatively sensitive to scratches, moisture, and impacts. If you plan to use your shelf in a high-stress environment, you might want to consider alternatives—either by post-treatment, for example with transparent protective coatings (acrylic or polyurethane sealants), or by adding a self-adhesive protective film.
Alternatively, you could also look into other shelving systems designed for heavy-duty use, such as those made of solid wood with a lacquer finish or metal.
That’s certainly true, but make sure to use a high-quality film specifically made for furniture; otherwise, durability might be an issue and the surface underneath could suffer in the long term.
If you like, you could describe a bit more where and exactly how the shelf will be used. Then more targeted advice can be provided.

Your question is very relevant because many people underestimate how much a shelf is affected by daily use. I covered my BILLY with a transparent protective film, and it has held up really well for over two years – no scratches, and it’s easy to clean.
This is really great because the film protects against moisture and minor impacts. Not only that, it keeps the shelf looking almost like new, even when it gets used roughly at times. So, this is a good way to make your BILLY much more durable 🙂
