Hello everyone, I have owned several Billy bookshelves from IKEA for some time now and have noticed that they develop some wear and tear over time that I don’t really like. I’m now looking for tips and tricks on how to keep the Billy shelves looking good for longer. Specifically, my question is: Are there any recommendations for care, maintenance, or gentle use to minimize scratches, discoloration, or other damage to the Billy shelves? What experiences have you had, and which products or practices work best? Thanks in advance for any help!
I just wanted to add that it is important not to overload the shelves and to distribute heavy books evenly in particular. If you have a lot of books, it is a good idea to reinforce the shelves with additional boards or secure them to the wall with extra brackets.
I treated small scratches with wax repair kits, which works surprisingly well and makes the shelves look almost like new.
How large are your shelves and what do you mainly store in them, Dion58?

Thank you very much for your really helpful answers and detailed tips!
I mostly have books and some decorations on the shelves, which aren’t too heavy, but unfortunately I often have to move the shelf.

maximum load capacity per shelf should not be exceeded
