Dion58Hello everyone, I have owned several Billy bookshelves from IKEA for some time now and have noticed that they develop some wear and tear over time that I don’t really like. I’m now looking for tips and tricks on how to keep the Billy shelves looking good for longer. Specifically, my question is: Are there any recommendations for care, maintenance, or gentle use to minimize scratches, discoloration, or other damage to the Billy shelves? What experiences have you had, and which products or practices work best? Thanks in advance for any help!
Hey Dion58, that’s a great question that many here are probably interested in! 🙂 I think the most important tip is really not to place damp or wet items directly on the shelves. This often causes water stains, and over time the boards swell. It’s best to use a protective layer underneath!
I also always use a microfiber duster, which is great because it doesn’t cause scratches. And if you want to do a thorough cleaning, it’s better to use mild dish soap with water, not harsh cleaners!!! It’s amazing how often you see mistakes in this area :-)

To add my input: The BILLY shelves are made of particle boards coated with melamine foil. This surface makes them relatively resistant, but they are sensitive to excessive moisture and mechanical stress. Therefore, it is important not to overload the shelves, as too much weight can cause warping.
Do you generally use your furniture with a lot or little movement on the shelves? This often affects the lifespan of the surface.

Hey, this is a great topic! 😄 What has helped me is using small felt pads under decorations and boxes to prevent minor scratches when moving items around.
Also, as mentioned before, no water – but sunlight also causes the colors to fade, so I don’t place the shelves directly by the window.
Overall, you just need to handle the BILLY shelves with a bit of care, and it definitely pays off! ;-)

The following tips are based on material analyses and user reviews:
1. Cleaning: Use only a damp microfiber cloth with a water-based, mild cleaning agent.
2. Moisture protection: Avoid direct contact with water or liquids, as particle boards can swell when wet and the surface may peel off.
3. Load capacity: Do not exceed the maximum load per shelf to prevent deformation. The manufacturer is quite strict about this.
4. UV protection: Direct exposure to sunlight can cause fading, so if possible, do not place the shelves in direct sunlight.
5. Care products: Special furniture polishes may sometimes cause undesirable residues.
By following these points, the lifespan of the BILLY shelves can be significantly extended.
