ixhelen666 Jul 2015 20:04Hello everyone, I recently started reorganizing my apartment and am considering using some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series. Unfortunately, my living space is quite limited, so I’m wondering if anyone has tips or proven strategies for using HEMNES furniture effectively in small areas. I’m especially interested in advice on the best selection of individual pieces, their arrangement, storage options, and any practical modifications that can save space or make the furniture more versatile. I would also appreciate experiences with which combinations from the series work well in small rooms and which ones to avoid. Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

However, before discussing modifications or combinations, you should decide on the HEMNES series first, as it is durable and sturdy – which also makes it relatively bulky. For very small rooms, I would at least question the suitability of this furniture range.
A tip upfront: focus primarily on compact options, such as narrow dressers or wall shelves, and avoid large single pieces like tall display cabinets. Also, vertical use of space is important; surface areas for placing items should remain slim to maintain a sense of retreat in the room.
When it comes to storage, try to choose furniture with multiple drawers. This allows you to store different items separately and in an organized way. Whether special fittings or modifications are worthwhile depends on your available space and your DIY skills. Have you already measured how much floor space you can realistically use?
I would like to add that the HEMNES series is generally very versatile when it comes to combinations. Especially in small rooms, it’s worth choosing furniture that offers dual functionality:
- A dresser that also serves as a TV stand
- Cabinets with drawers for clothes, but also for files or small items
- Wall shelves that make optimal use of wall space without taking up floor area
I agree with this, as tall cabinets can quickly appear bulky and reduce light, which makes small rooms look even tighter.
I also recommend measuring carefully before purchasing and, for example, placing boxes or tape on the floor to test the best arrangement. If possible, choose furniture with light surfaces or use light colors to make the space feel more open.
What does your room look like exactly? Is it more of a narrow hallway, a tiny bedroom, or a combined living room with kitchen?

Short and to the point:
- Use narrow dressers or low sideboards from the HEMNES series.
- Wall shelves are your friends, especially the HEMNES wall shelves.
- Focus on a few but multifunctional pieces.
- Avoid tall display cabinets or bulky wardrobes.
This saves space and keeps things organized.

Focus on a few multifunctional pieces. This is an important point. Multifunctionality can also be achieved through smart use, for example by using a dresser not only for storage but also keeping the top surface free for decorative or frequently used items – creating added value without extra furniture.
Additionally, I recommend considering the so-called "furniture footprint principle" when planning space: always leave a little extra clearance in front of furniture. Especially with a small cabinet with drawers like the HEMNES, it’s frustrating if you can barely open the drawers because the space is too tight.
Have you considered adding small casters to make furniture easier to move when needed? Although this is a modification not officially recommended, it can be very helpful in tight spaces if you want to stay flexible.
