Hello everyone, I recently bought some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series, specifically tables and cabinets with solid pine wood surfaces that are either untreated or white-stained. I am now looking for advice on the best way to care for these Hemnes wood surfaces to prevent scratches, discoloration, or drying out of the wood. I am especially interested in which cleaning products are recommended, whether waxes, oils, or special treatments should be used, and how often these applications should ideally be done to preserve the natural look and feel for as long as possible. Are there any practical everyday tips or proven home remedies that contribute to sustainable care? Thanks for your experiences and recommendations!

Another important point: When cleaning, keep noise levels low—gentle wiping is sufficient; excessive scrubbing can cause damage.

In addition to the points already mentioned, here are some facts:
- The pine wood used by Ikea is untreated and can swell if exposed to too much moisture.
- Neutral, pH-balanced cleaning agents are recommended for cleaning.
- Beeswax-based waxes are ideal because they are breathable and do not seal the wood.
- Oil treatments can darken the surface and should be used sparingly and only after the wood is dry.

These measures ensure long-term stability and appearance without damaging the material.

This is such an important point! I recently treated my Hemnes dresser with this kind of wax, and the wood feels much more alive. Plus, you worry less about minor scratches, which are somewhat camouflaged.

Depending on the condition of the wood, apply a light coat of beeswax-based furniture wax once or twice a year; this protects and nourishes the wood.

Thank you for this detailed guide. I’m curious if you treat the Hemnes furniture differently when the surface is white stained compared to the natural wood? Does the white finish require special care, or can you use the same maintenance routine?

Good question! The whitewash finish offers some extra protection to the wood, so you can be a bit less cautious with water. However, the same rules apply: gentle cleaning and no harsh cleaners. I would recommend using wax sparingly on whitewashed wood, as wax can darken the surface and alter the color.

For white-stained Hemnes, dusting and gentle cleaning are sufficient, while waxes are more suitable for natural wood.
