Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble my IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers soon in an older house with a significantly uneven wooden floor. I am aware that the IKEA assembly instructions provide little guidance for situations involving uneven floors, so I am wondering: Are there any general or practical tips or experiences on the best way to assemble and stabilize IKEA Hemnes furniture—especially chests of drawers—when the base surface is not level?
I am particularly interested in how to handle unevenness without the furniture becoming misaligned or the drawers no longer sliding smoothly. Are there specific techniques, additional accessories, or craftsmanship solutions that have proven effective?
I would be very grateful for any constructive advice or suggestions!

As a supplement to the previous tips:
When changing the feet, keep an eye on the dresser’s connection system. Hemnes models often have solid wooden bodies, which usually allows the original feet to be removed using a screwdriver.
For a stable stand on uneven floors, I also recommend:
- Using adjustable furniture feet with rubber pads to protect the floor while providing grip.
- Adjusting each foot individually and checking the furniture multiple times with a spirit level.
- If you choose to use wedges, make sure they remain permanently stable and do not compress or harden, as this would affect the stability.
Finally, be sure to secure the dresser to the wall, as this is a safety standard, especially on uneven floors.
From a craftsmanship perspective, the procedure is relatively straightforward if well prepared.

- Preparation: Use a longer spirit level or a digital inclinometer to determine the exact height difference at each leg.
- Remove the feet: Hemnes dressers are screwed in. Original feet can often be removed with a screwdriver or cordless drill.
- Obtain replacement feet: Adjustable metal furniture feet with a large base area and rubberized bottoms provide optimal load distribution and help protect the floor.
- Install the new feet: Screw them in carefully without damaging the material. After installing each foot, check the height precisely with a spirit level.
- Additional shims for larger unevenness: Sometimes adjustable feet are not sufficient or lack enough adjustment range. Thin wooden or plastic shims can be used as additional support.
- Check stability: After assembly, gently move the dresser and check if it stands securely. Uneven floors can otherwise cause instability and tipping.
- Wall attachment: This is mandatory for Hemnes furniture. It secures the furniture against tipping but does not replace a stable footing.
Especially with older wooden plank floors, consider cutting and placing a thin OSB board or MDF board underneath to create a level surface. The board would distribute the load and ensure a flat support area.
This way, your Hemnes dresser becomes a stable piece of furniture despite uneven floors.

To provide stability for the furniture on uneven floors, adjustable feet—often available as threaded furniture legs—are the best solution. It should be noted that IKEA Hemnes furniture usually does not have threaded inserts in the feet. Therefore, the original feet need to be removed, and the adjustable feet must be properly installed—often requiring an additional mounting plate that is screwed on.
Proper adjustment of the feet is also crucial: use a long spirit level to check both the cross and longitudinal axes of the furniture and make corrections accordingly. If the floor is uneven by up to 12 mm (0.5 inches), this is usually within the adjustable range of many furniture feet.
Non-slip pads under the feet are also recommended to prevent the furniture from sliding and to protect the floor from damage.
