Hello everyone,

I recently changed my flooring from carpet to laminate, and now I notice that my KALLAX shelf is no longer level. On the old, soft carpet, the small unevenness could be easily compensated for, but on the new, hard laminate, the shelf is slightly tilted and wobbles a bit.

My question to you: What is the best way to shim or level the KALLAX shelf to make it stable and perfectly horizontal again? Are there proven materials or techniques that are easy to apply without damaging the shelf or being too visible?

I look forward to your advice, including tips on whether to adjust the individual feet or if another method is more practical. Thanks in advance!

Interesting starting point. First, you should check whether the laminate flooring was installed completely flat. Even minor unevenness there can be the underlying issue in the long run.

Then: why are you looking for a simple "shimming" solution? You could also support the shelf from underneath or level it using special furniture wedges made of plastic or wood.

I would question whether you should aim for stability through an adjustable solution—like furniture glides with leveling screws—instead of just shimming. That is more practical and sustainable.

You might also want to consider whether the shelf is secured to the wall, as stabilizing it from above could be an alternative.

Hello kekufi,

Here is a brief guide on how to securely and permanently level your shelf:

1. First, check all the legs for damage or uneven height.
2. Use furniture shims that you place under the affected legs. These are available in plastic or wood and are inexpensive.
3. Alternatively, you can combine felt pads to compensate for minor unevenness.
4. If that is not enough, use self-adhesive rubber pads, layering them as needed to increase thickness.

Important: When working with multiple small components, make sure the supports do not slip or get compressed over time due to the weight.

Summary: Focus on adjustable and easily reversible solutions rather than fixed, irreversible under-structure modifications. This way, you can readjust or realign later if necessary.

In your case, I would recommend using furniture risers specifically designed for laminate flooring. These are usually non-slip and protect the floor while also compensating for minor height differences.

If the KALLAX only wobbles slightly, shimming with plastic or rubber wedges is the best option. These are easy to adjust and durable at the same time.

Another tip: Use a spirit level to check which side is higher so you can work precisely.

It's great that you're researching this so thoroughly! 🙂

I had a similar situation when I renewed my floor. I simply stuck those small felt furniture pads under the legs! That helped a lot, and now the shelf is rock solid!

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the ones you initially overlook – give it a try and let us know how it worked out for you! Good luck!!!

Well, I often see these "simple solutions" as just quick fixes. Shimming furniture to compensate for unevenness sounds more like a compromise than a real solution to me.

If the laminate floor is truly level and your KALLAX is still wobbly, the shelf itself might be warped or damaged. I'm doubtful that many small supports will make much difference.

I would recommend professional leveling or a permanent fix rather than spending time on this kind of "DIY patchwork." Of course, temporary solutions are fine if they serve their purpose, but overall, they’re not necessarily sustainable.
