Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding furniture modifications, specifically with IKEA products: How easy is it really to customize the Brimnes range, for example dressers or beds? I am especially interested in the possibilities for design adjustments—whether these are mostly simple tweaks or if more extensive modifications and DIY skills are required.

Has anyone had practical experience with alterations, such as painting, attaching additional elements, or even replacing parts? What materials or tools are useful, and where are the limits of what can be done?

I’m looking forward to your insights and tips. I’m also curious about how much time and cost should realistically be expected for such projects. Thanks in advance!

Hello til54,

regarding your interesting question: Remodeling IKEA Brimnes furniture is basically possible but requires different approaches and preparation depending on your expectations and goals.

First of all, Brimnes is a series made of relatively thin, coated chipboard, which makes drilling, sanding, or other mechanical modifications somewhat delicate since the material is not as robust as solid wood.

If you want to replace fronts or handles, that is relatively easy as long as the dimensions match or you do some filling and sanding adjustments. Painting is of course possible, but the surface should be thoroughly sanded beforehand and treated with an appropriate primer to ensure adhesion. You will also achieve better results with special furniture paints or spray paints than with standard wall paint.

For more complex modifications like adding extra compartments, cutouts, or redesigning the interior, I recommend:
- Precise planning with sketches
- Using a drill bit set specifically for chipboard to minimize splintering
- Using wooden dowels and glue to maintain stability

In general, it gets more complicated quickly if you change the module structure, since screw positions and connection points are fixed.

I’m curious: What specific modifications do you have in mind? Are you aiming for visual changes or functional expansions?

I can then provide more targeted advice!

Brimnes is easy to paint and can be customized with new handles. However, for larger modifications, some experience in furniture construction is required.

Hello til54,

I can help you out from experience. The Brimnes components, thanks to their relatively smooth and standardized parts, are actually quite suitable for remodeling.

- If you want to change the appearance, sanding followed by painting or covering (with vinyl wrap or wallpaper) is a good option. Make sure edges are treated carefully, otherwise the look will suffer.

- For replacing the handles, you only need a screwdriver, provided the screws fit.

- Anyone modifying interior compartments or doors should have some DIY skills, because the panels are thin, as kulau already mentioned.

- Depending on how adventurous you are, you can also use trim or moldings to give the furniture a unique character.

All this can be done without professional equipment, but a bit of patience and careful work are important. If you have questions about specific steps, feel free to ask again.

I completely repainted a Brimnes bed in a dark wood tone and covered the handles myself with leather! The result turned out really cool! 🙂

You just need to be careful with the surface, as the panel isn’t very thick. But the fun and individuality you gain are really great.

So definitely go for it, it’s doable and a lot of fun! If you want, I’m happy to give you some painting tips!

Very nice, that sounds like a great project! I would add that for such a transformation, special attention should be paid to surface preparation. Sanding should be done with fine grit to avoid damaging the thin panel.

I totally agree! A common pitfall in remodeling is that particleboard can splinter or break if overloaded or handled improperly. It is also recommended to reinforce edges around cutouts with wood glue and edge banding to maintain stability.

As mentioned, the material allows for design flexibility, but there are certain limitations. What exactly do you want to remodel or change, so we can provide more specific advice?
