christatau29 Mar 2022 08:13Hello everyone,
I would like to know if anyone here has permanently placed their IKEA KALLAX shelving unit outdoors? I am especially interested in how you protect the furniture from weather conditions like rain, snow, or UV exposure.
The shelf is planned to be placed in my garden under a partially covered area that does not fully protect it from moisture. Considering the materials (particleboard, lacquered surface), I’m wondering if it makes sense to seal it additionally, treat it with varnish or a special film, or if it even needs to be fully impregnated.
Does anyone have experience with using KALLAX outdoors? Are there any tips to increase its durability without compromising the design?
I’m looking forward to your advice and feedback!

Good morning,
I have had my KALLAX on the terrace for about a year now, although it is placed under a well-protected canopy. Still, I had to take some measures to prevent material damage.
First of all, it is important to know that KALLAX is made of particleboard with a melamine coating – which is water-repellent but not waterproof. The edges are especially vulnerable, as moisture can easily penetrate there and cause swelling.
My protection plan is as follows:
1. I sealed all visible edges with clear silicone. This prevents water from getting in.
2. Then I treated the entire unit with a clear polyurethane varnish. The color remains intact, and the surface becomes much more resistant to moisture.
3. For extra safety, the unit stands on small plastic furniture feet, so no moisture from the ground reaches the bottom directly.
If your shelter is not completely dry, I would definitely recommend applying varnish or a wood stain that repels moisture. Bare melamine surfaces without sealing, in my experience, do not last long outdoors.
It would also be interesting to know how often you expect direct water exposure and how much load the construction has to bear – KALLAX is actually not designed for outdoor use.

I am skeptical about whether a KALLAX shelf can really be used outdoors on a long-term basis in a meaningful way.
The particleboard panels used in its manufacture tend to swell relatively quickly in damp conditions. Even if stains or varnishes are applied as seals, their effectiveness is usually limited.
Therefore, I wonder: Are there any studies or long-term tests that genuinely recommend a protective treatment?
There are also ready-made outdoor furniture options made from more durable materials such as plastic or treated wood. Why try to modify a piece of furniture that was originally designed for indoor use?
I see it more as a temporary solution, but I would be cautious about permanent use.

Factually accurate: KALLAX is not designed for outdoor use. The panels are made of particleboard, which absorbs moisture and swells.
Therefore, the protection approach focuses on thoroughly sealing all surfaces:
- Seal edges (using silicone or a special edge sealant)
- Treat the surface with multiple layers of clear varnish or weather-resistant wood stain
- Raise the furniture feet to prevent moisture absorption from the ground
This makes the shelf more durable but it is not weatherproof in the true sense.
If possible, it is better to find a permanently dry spot or use an outdoor shelf.

I once had to improvise when I wanted to use my KALLAX outdoors spontaneously – under a pergola.
My tip: Use liquid protective waxes that are also used for garden furniture. They coat the wood like a protective layer, while being breathable and water-repellent.
Of course, this doesn’t provide 100% protection, but it’s better than nothing. Also, cover it with a tarp overnight and during heavy rain – that will help it last reasonably well.
And keep reapplying regularly! 😉 Time-consuming, but doable.

Brief guide in case someone wants to use their KALLAX outdoors:
1. Preparation: Disassemble the shelf, clean all parts thoroughly, and dry them completely.
2. Carefully sand the edges and seal them with acrylic sealant.
3. Then apply several thin coats of an exterior wood varnish or polyurethane (PU) varnish suitable for wood (follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times).
4. After drying, place the shelf on weather-resistant furniture pads to avoid direct contact with the ground.
5. For extra protection: use a roof cover or a protective cover.
Simply placing it outside without any modifications is definitely not advisable due to potential material damage.
