Hello everyone, I’m preparing for my move and considering the best ways to protect my IKEA Malm furniture to prevent any damage. Specifically, I’m looking for advice on padding, disassembling, and safe loading. What materials, methods, and tools have you used to protect the surfaces from scratches and dents while keeping the furniture manageable to transport in separate parts? If anyone has experience with Malm dressers or beds, I would appreciate any specific tips. Thank you!

I would recommend disassembling the furniture if possible. Then use thick packing paper or blankets to prevent scratches. Corner protectors, which are available at low cost, are suitable for edges. Before loading the furniture into the vehicle, it is best to secure everything with ratchet straps.

Hello igorlu, I’m happy to help with a simple step-by-step plan:

1. Disassemble: Collect screws and small parts in a labeled zip bag.
2. Surface protection: Wrap furniture pieces with bubble wrap or furniture pads.
3. Edge protection: Especially protect corners and edges with foam or edge protectors.
4. Packaging: For secure transport, I recommend furniture blankets or thick moving blankets.
5. Loading: Place heavy items at the bottom, lighter parts on top, and secure everything against shifting.

Common mistakes include insufficient padding, unlabeled screws, and unsecured loads.

Exactly! That, plus a bit of patience and some good music while packing. Additionally, I would recommend using felt or foam padding on especially delicate surfaces, such as lacquered fronts. This way, you can avoid those nasty scratches that can really spoil the moving experience ;-)

When moving, it is important to remember that Malm furniture is mostly made of particleboard and therefore more sensitive to moisture and pressure. For this reason, I recommend:

- Disassembling the furniture if the design allows.
- Carefully storing and labeling screws and fittings in small bags.
- Protecting surfaces with anti-static fleece covers or specialized furniture blankets.
- Using foam edge protectors on the corners.

One more tip: When loading the moving truck, make sure the furniture is not placed directly on floors or dirty surfaces to avoid abrasion.

Additionally, I find it practical to wrap the furniture with stretch film before transport. This keeps dust away and prevents minor scratches caused by friction. Of course, you have to pay attention to screws and plug connections; otherwise, the assembly will be delayed later on.
