Hello everyone, I recently purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA that I would like to securely anchor to my carpeted floor to prevent tipping and slipping. Since the furniture is relatively tall and heavy, I want to avoid it falling over under stress, for example from children, pets, or during cleaning. My question is: what methods and tools are best suited to stabilize and safely fix Malm furniture on a soft carpet? It is important to me that the anchoring is as reversible as possible, does not cause large-scale damage to the carpet, and remains reliable over a longer period. Are there specific anchoring kits, clamp strips, or other techniques you would recommend? Any advice regarding potential risks or installation tips is also welcome.

Hey, great that you’re asking so specifically right away – it makes things a lot easier here 😄! So, when it comes to carpets, screwing directly into the floor is usually not practical. What I can recommend are anti-slip pads that you stick under the feet of the Malm furniture. They prevent shifting on the carpet, especially if it’s quite smooth. You can also secure the furniture with special wall anchors, which are fixed to the wall with screws. The combination of both provides good stability. A wall anchor is almost essential, mainly for tipping safety. It’s best to double-check beforehand if the wall can hold the screws properly. If you’re looking for something less invasive, there are also clamp strips, but these are often not as sturdy. Good luck with securing everything! 🙂

To ensure a secure attachment of Malm furniture on carpeted floors, several factors should be considered. First, carpet itself is a soft, springy surface that deforms under pressure. This reduces friction effects, allowing furniture to slide more easily. Simply screwing into the floor is not an option here. The connection between the furniture and the wall is crucial, as an anti-tip wall anchor is the most important safety measure.

If you want to secure the furniture solely on the carpet, there are special non-slip pads or rubber mats that improve grip. These are used by attaching them under the furniture legs; they absorb movement and prevent sliding.

Another option is heavy carpet underlays with anti-slip coatings underneath, which increase friction.

If the carpet is very thick and soft, it should be checked whether the furniture itself is stable enough, for example by adjusting the adjustable feet on Malm.

Reversible attachment is often possible when using adhesive pads or anti-slip mats, as they leave no or minimal marks. However, every solution should be considered subjectively in terms of effectiveness and effort.

What exact type of carpet do you have? Thickness, material? That can greatly influence the options.

Good question, my carpet is a relatively dense, medium-pile high-loop synthetic carpet, about 15mm (0.6 inches) high. The surface is rather smooth but not completely flat. It has some cushioning, in my opinion. It would be interesting to know whether, for example, anti-slip pads hold reliably on such carpets or if a version with wall anchors is more or less necessary.

I have doubts about the effectiveness of anti-slip pads on a high-pile carpet as you described.

sound good in principle, but on this type of pile the effect is likely to be minimal. The carpet will reduce the grip of the pads because the surface is uneven and the fibers have some springiness. In addition, adhesive pads carry the risk that over time the adhesion weakens or dirt collects underneath.

The truly secure method, as already mentioned, is to anchor the furniture to the wall with suitable anti-tip devices. Solely stabilizing against slipping isolates the problem too much and can create a false sense of security. Especially with children and minor accidents, tip resistance is crucial.

Therefore, it might be better to focus primarily on wall fixing and use the carpet’s slip resistance as a supplement, not as the sole solution.

Securing to the wall with tilt locks is the most important step.
Use anti-slip pads under the furniture, but not as a substitute for wall fastening.
Practical tip: insert screws into wall plugs; do not rely on adhesive only.
