Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on a drywall (gypsum board) wall and want to ensure the mounting is permanently stable. The wall consists of plasterboard panels, and I cannot directly reach any load-bearing studs, or at best only irregularly. My question is: What are the options for securely attaching Metod wall cabinets to drywall without the mounting loosening over time or damaging the wall?

I understand that drywall alone has limited load capacity, so I am especially interested in suitable anchors, reinforcements, or perhaps special mounting systems. Suggestions on how to possibly reinforce the wall or better distribute the load would also be helpful.

Are there any practical experiences with certain anchors or fixing materials in connection with Metod cabinets, which often weigh between 70 and 100 kg (155 and 220 lbs) including contents? Thanks in advance for your tips!

The best approach is to locate the wooden studs behind the drywall and fasten directly to them. If they are not accessible, use heavy-duty toggle anchors. Ideally, use multiple anchors per cabinet.

For securely mounting Ikea Metod cabinets to drywall walls without a load-bearing substructure, high-load expansion or toggle anchors designed specifically for gypsum board are recommended.

Important:
- Load distribution: Fastening points should be spread over as wide an area as possible.
- Multiple fastenings per cabinet, at least 3 screws.
- Preferably attach to a wooden stud if available.

As an alternative, additional reinforcement can be applied:
- Installing a plywood panel behind the drywall.
- Using special metal profiles to support the load.

The exact assessment depends on wall thickness, number of panels, and cabinet weight; for weights over 70 kg (154 lbs), a reinforced substructure is advisable.

That’s how I do it as well. There are magnetic stud finders, which makes it quick and easy.

If no studs can be found, metal anchors such as molly bolts with high load capacity are helpful. These can realistically support 10 to 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) per anchor in drywall. Use several per cabinet.

Mounting a plywood board behind the drywall
, this is a neat DIY solution.

For this, you screw a wooden board (e.g., 18 mm (0.7 inch) plywood) onto the wall, either onto the studs or using heavy-duty anchors. You then mount the cabinet onto this board as if it were a solid wall. This way, the load is evenly distributed, and the drywall is relieved.
