Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from IKEA that I have placed in different rooms. However, these rooms experience significant temperature fluctuations, especially during the transition from winter to spring and vice versa. In some cases, this leads to slight warping of the material as well as noises caused by the expansion and contraction of the particleboard.

My question is quite specific: How can I better protect Billy shelves from such temperature fluctuations without affecting their appearance or functionality? Are there any preservation methods or special tips to keep the surface and structure of the shelves stable over the long term? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Elonto, try not to place the shelf directly next to radiators or windows with strong sunlight. This helps to avoid extreme temperature fluctuations. Maintaining indoor humidity between 40 and 60% also helps.

Additional information: Particleboard is sensitive to moisture and temperature. An effective protection method is to treat the inside of the shelf with a clear varnish or wax. This reduces the surface’s exposure to moisture, minimizing swelling and shrinking. Maintaining a consistent indoor temperature is also important, ideally between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius (64 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit). Sudden temperature changes, especially between the heating season and summer, should be strictly avoided.

Billy bookcases are made of particleboard with a foil coating. This coating is not waterproof, only splash-resistant. My recommendation: try to avoid heavy water damage inside the unit, so do not place wet plants or damp objects on it. Additionally, you can attach a thin insulation material such as thin cork or simple polystyrene sheets behind the bookcase to help reduce temperature fluctuations.

Hello Elonto,

I am familiar with this issue, as I have three Billy shelves in uninsulated basement rooms myself. Temperature fluctuations can indeed cause warping and small cracks. What helps is a combination of well-controlled indoor climate and surface treatment. For one shelf, I used a clear water-based wood furniture polish. This somewhat stabilized the surface. However, it is important to remember that Billy shelves are designed for normal living conditions and not for extreme humidity or temperature variations.

If you don’t have to keep the shelf permanently in a room with significant climate changes, I would recommend choosing a better location.

In addition to the measures mentioned, I recommend the following steps:

1. Allow some air circulation between the shelf and the wall. Placing shelves directly against exterior walls promotes moisture fluctuations.
2. Avoid placing the shelf directly on a cold floor without insulation.
3. Use dehumidifiers if humidity levels fluctuate significantly.

Billy shelves are not specifically designed for extreme climatic conditions, so climate stability is the most important factor.
