Hello everyone,
I have a specific issue with my Malm dresser from IKEA: after some time, the drawers start to squeak, especially when pulling them out and closing them again. It produces a rather unpleasant, creaking noise that becomes quite annoying over time.
I suspect it might be due to the drawer slides or possibly insufficient lubrication. The squeaking doesn’t seem to be caused by improper installation or overloading, as the drawers squeak both when empty and filled.
Has anyone experienced this problem? How can it be resolved exactly? Is it enough to clean the drawer slides, or do they need to be replaced? What lubricants are best suited to solve this long-term without damaging the mechanics?
I would appreciate concrete advice, as I don’t want to disassemble the whole unit or use unsuitable tools. Thanks in advance!

Regarding the issue, I can add the following: The squeaking usually occurs due to a lack of lubrication between the sliding rails and the rollers. You can gently clean the rails with a microfiber cloth and then apply silicone spray, as it doesn’t leave a sticky residue and lasts longer than, for example, WD-40. In cases of heavy dirt buildup, it’s worth completely removing the drawer for thorough cleaning.

I am familiar with this issue, as MALM drawers tend to squeak after extended use. It is important not to force the pulling or pushing, as this can damage the mechanism. A gentle cleaning of the runners is the first step. Ideally, remove the drawer completely to access all the rails easily. A good quality silicone spray is actually recommended because it is non-sticky and helps smooth movement.
If that does not help, you should check whether the rollers still turn easily or if they might be bent. Sometimes dust or small particles cause them to lose smooth operation. I also recommend not treating the plastic parts with oil, as this can cause dirty residue over time.
Please keep us updated on whether these tips help!

It’s best to clean the rails thoroughly, then apply some silicone spray. Thanks, that sounds quite specific already. I assume the silicone spray is recommended because it doesn’t attract dust or dirt easily?

If there is heavy soiling, it’s worth fully removing the drawer for a thorough cleaning. How difficult is it to disassemble the MALM drawers? Can it be done with simple tools? I’d prefer not to have to completely take it apart just to access the inside.

Gently cleaning the rails is the first step. It’s best to remove the drawer completely to easily reach all the runners.I want to do this as gently as possible too. If you recommend removing the drawer, what should I watch out for to avoid any damage? Are there common pitfalls with MALM models?
