Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question: Are there any tips or tricks to make my IKEA Malm drawers open more smoothly and prevent them from slamming open so harshly and quickly? With my drawers, there is often a springy popping open, which can be unpleasant, especially with lightly loaded or heavier drawers. I am particularly interested in practical solutions or adjustments that work well for the Malm series. I would appreciate any experiences and concrete tips, for example, on protecting the drawer slides or improving the opening and closing action. Thanks in advance!

Self-adhesive bumpers on the contact surfaces can reduce noise

I think that only partially solves the issue. What really bothers me more is the sharp opening; the problem isn’t just with closing.

Have you ever considered slowing down the opening with a spring or a soft-close drawer insert?

Or maybe the drawer is just too easy to slide, which can quickly lead to it slamming shut.

True, with Malm the opening often feels a bit too quick.

In my experience, you can achieve a gentle opening resistance by adjusting the drawer slides so they don’t glide quite as easily.

However, you should be careful not to cause any jamming.

I believe these minimal, gentle yet controlled movements are what give kitchen and furniture drawers their charm. 🙂

Sometimes you don’t even realize that you’re pulling the drawer too hard. Just a slightly lighter touch makes a big difference.

If that isn’t enough, as mentioned before: dampers work well. Or check if the drawer has too much clearance or play.

Tip: Try using a felt pad as a buffer instead of rubber. It gives a different feel, in my opinion.

The fact is: The Malm series was originally designed as a simple, cost-effective solution that has its limitations with heavy use.

For smooth opening, I recommend precise maintenance:

- Completely remove and clean the drawer runners
- Then lubricate specifically with Teflon or silicone spray
- Check the drawer play and, if necessary, adjust the running behavior using small washers on the mechanism

Self-adhesive dampers are primarily an inexpensive retrofit solution but do not technically compare to a genuine soft-close mechanism.

Thank you for this assessment. It sounds like I need to adjust my expectations: I am not looking for high-end comfort, but practical solutions for simpler functionality.

Regarding maintenance: Which cleaning agents and lubricants do you specifically recommend that will not damage the plastic components of the sliding tracks? I want to avoid any plastic damage.

A mild dish soap solution is suitable as a cleaning agent to avoid any damage. Under no circumstances use aggressive solvents.

For lubrication, I recommend silicone spray. It is compatible with plastics and does not leave any sticky residue.

Other oils or greases can rather cause damage or attract dirt in this case.
