Hello everyone,

I hope someone here can help me. I am planning to treat my Ikea Hemnes furniture with wood oil to maintain it and protect it from moisture as well as wear and tear. Since the Hemnes range is known to be made of solid pine wood, my question is: which wood oil is particularly suitable for Ikea Hemnes furniture?

It is important to me that the oil penetrates well into the surface, highlights the grain nicely, does not change the color too much, and leaves a natural look similar to the original Ikea finishes. Additionally, it should be durable for everyday use and preferably low in odor.

Does anyone have experience with specific wood oils that work especially well for Ikea pine wood? Maybe there are also tips regarding preparation or application that I should keep in mind.

Thanks in advance for your support!

That is a good and quite complex question that is best considered from several perspectives. Ikea Hemnes is usually made of pine wood, which is relatively soft and porous. When treating it with wood oil, you should ideally take the following aspects into account:

- Absorption capacity: Pine wood absorbs oils fairly well, but the pore structure varies. You should choose a relatively thin wood oil that penetrates deeply rather than just sitting on the surface.

- Ingredients: Natural resin- and linseed oil-based oils are often recommended because they allow the surface to breathe and do not form a film. Avoid oils with too many additives and solvents, especially for indoor furniture.

- Color change and maintenance: Oils like pure linseed oil can significantly darken and yellow pine wood. If you want to preserve the original tone, a neutral or light oil is preferable, possibly even with white pigments (white oils) for easier color matching.

- Application: Before oiling, the surface should be thoroughly sanded to open the pores and remove dust. After application, the oil must be allowed to soak in properly and any excess oil should be well wiped off or rinsed.

Personally, I often use combinations of linseed and tung oil, which leave a durable yet natural finish. There are also special furniture oils for pine wood from brand manufacturers; look for products that specify “open wood breathability” as a feature.

One more tip: always test the oil first on an inconspicuous spot or a leftover piece to assess the color effect. How have your furniture pieces been treated so far? Untreated, already waxed, or lacquered?

Exactly! It might sound obvious, but it really saves a lot of disappointment if the final result isn’t to your liking 😅.

Regarding your question, Lasar: I once used a wood oil from Osmo, specifically the wax oil for pine. It absorbs nicely, has a pleasant (not overpowering) scent, and gives the surface a warm glow without completely changing the color.

Of course, pine can darken a little—that happens with almost all natural oils. But for Ikea Hemnes furniture, in my opinion, that’s not an issue—it actually adds a cozy feel!

What’s also great: the product is water-repellent and you can find it in most hardware stores. When applying, don’t use too much at once; better to apply several thin coats.

If you find the color getting too warm, you can also use a UV-protective oil, which keeps the color a bit fresher.

Good luck with the oiling, and let us know how it turns out!

To add to the previous posts, here are some precise tips on the topic “wood oil for Ikea Hemnes”:

- Ikea Hemnes furniture is made of solid, mostly untreated pine wood with a fine surface texture. This requires an oil that highlights the wood grain without sealing the surface.

- A so-called hardwax oil based on natural oils (e.g., linseed oil and carnauba wax) is recommended. It creates a durable, low-maintenance layer and is well suited for wooden furniture.

- Products such as “Osmo Hardwax Oil Natural” or “Clou Furniture Oil” are often mentioned. The key is that the oil does not contain solvents with harsh chemicals to avoid damaging the wood.

- Preparation: Before oiling, lightly sand the furniture with fine sandpaper (grit 180-220). Remove all dust completely.

- Application: Apply the oil thinly with a lint-free cloth or brush, let it absorb for 15-30 minutes, then wipe off excess oil. Repeat after 12-24 hours, applying a total of 2-3 coats.

- Maintenance: Treated wood can later be refreshed using maintenance oil. Areas with heavy use should be re-oiled occasionally.

If allergies or sensitivities are a concern, I also recommend checking the safety data sheet of the products.

If you have further questions regarding specific application or product recommendations, feel free to ask.
