Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Hemnes furniture and plan to place it in an area of my home that occasionally experiences higher humidity levels (for example, a bathroom or entryway). My question is: How can I adequately protect Ikea HEMNES furniture from moisture to prevent the wood from swelling or unwanted warping?

I understand that HEMNES furniture is mainly made of pine wood and is coated with either paint or stain, but I would like to know which methods or additional protective measures are recommended to make it more resistant to moisture. Are there any suitable products or approaches you can suggest to help prevent long-term damage from humidity?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

This is a very relevant question because pine wood is naturally susceptible to moisture damage. Generally, I recommend the following approach:

- Avoid placing the furniture directly against damp walls or on floors that may release moisture.
- To enhance protection, treat the furniture with a suitable wood protective varnish or oil before assembly. Polyurethane-based products are quite durable and provide good moisture resistance.
- It is important to ensure that all visible surfaces, especially edges, are thoroughly coated with the protective treatment, as moisture tends to penetrate most easily there.
- Regular inspections and reapplication of the protective coating when needed will extend the furniture’s lifespan.

A barrier against rising moisture, such as a plastic sheet or spacers under the furniture, can also be helpful.

Personally, I would not recommend simple furniture wax products, as they only provide superficial protection and wear off quickly.

If the furniture will be placed in very humid environments, improving the indoor climate—for example, through ventilation or a dehumidifier—would also be advisable.

This is a really important point!

I added small felt or rubber pads under the feet of my HEMNES dresser to improve air circulation underneath. I also applied a water-resistant clear lacquer myself, which I believe makes a big difference!

Exactly, you shouldn't underestimate that! You should check the condition every few months, especially if the furniture is close to moisture.

In my opinion, these steps offer really good protection for the furniture – definitely give it a try, I’m really impressed with the durability afterwards!!! 🙂

The topic of moisture protection for HEMNES is really important, and I’d like to add a few points based on my experience:

- HEMNES is made from solid pine wood, which naturally reacts sensitively to moisture. The factory-applied finish provides a basic level of protection, but it may not be enough in damp rooms.

- For additional protection, I recommend applying special water-repellent wood stains or varnishes that penetrate deeply into the wood structure. This is especially important for the bottom parts and edges, which are the most vulnerable.

- Also, ensure there is sufficient air circulation in the room. Furniture that is constantly exposed to fine mist or steam should ideally be placed slightly away from walls or treated specifically for humid environments.

- Some people also use suitable pads made of cork or silicone under the furniture legs to prevent direct contact with potentially damp floors and to promote ventilation.

- Important note: furniture should never be cleaned with water over extended periods—wiping with a damp cloth is fine as long as it is well wrung out, and the wood is allowed to dry thoroughly afterwards.

This will protect the material in the long term and help maintain its appearance.
