Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my Billy shelves from IKEA, which have become quite dirty over the years. Especially in the corners and on the metal fittings, dust, discoloration, and sometimes grease buildup have accumulated, which is difficult to remove with regular wiping. My question is: How can I properly clean Billy shelves when they are heavily soiled, without damaging them and while preserving the surface? What cleaning products and methods are particularly recommended to remove stubborn dirt and stains?

I would appreciate any tips on products, techniques, and any precautions to take. Thanks in advance!

For cleaning heavily soiled Billy shelves, I recommend first wiping them down with a damp microfiber cloth. For stubborn dirt, a mild dish detergent in lukewarm water can help. Do not spray anything directly onto the shelf; instead, moisten the cloth. Afterwards, wipe immediately with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

In the case of heavy soiling on Billy shelves, a systematic approach is necessary to properly clean both the particleboard and metal components without damaging the surface. First, the unit should be completely emptied, and loose debris removed with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a brush attachment. The use of water must be cautious, as the boards are not water-resistant.

That is correct, but I also recommend using specialized wood cleaners or mild solvents like diluted denatured alcohol for stubborn stains such as grease or discolorations on the surface. It is important to test these first in an inconspicuous area to avoid color changes or dulling.

For the metal brackets, I use a spray made from diluted vinegar essence with water, which effectively dissolves lime scale and dirt. After treatment, thorough drying is essential to prevent rust.

What kind of dirt exactly do you have on the metal parts and the surface? This information would help to better recommend the appropriate cleaner.

Thank you in advance for the initial tips.

Regarding the metal contamination: it is mainly dust that has combined with moisture over time to form a light layer of rust or a dull film. There are also grease residues from nearby cooking areas. The dirt on the wooden surface partly comes from fingerprints and occasional spills (drinks, food).

I cannot remove the shelf from the room because it is built-in and loaded. Therefore, I am looking for cleaning products and methods that work quickly and require minimal water or steam.

Are there any special cleaners that are mild yet effective? Or household remedies that could be suitable?

For removing rust from metal hangers, I recommend carefully using vinegar diluted 1:1 with water. Soak a soft cloth or sponge in the solution and thoroughly wipe the metal surfaces. Do NOT use abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the surface of the hangers.

For the wooden boards, especially with grease or beverage stains, pH-neutral cleaners or special water-based furniture care products are suitable.

This requires special care to avoid moisture damage. Use well-wrung cloths to minimize the amount of water penetrating the wood surface.

After cleaning, make sure to dry all surfaces thoroughly to prevent swelling of the chipboard or the formation of rust.

Hey, that sounds like quite a challenge 😊! I also once got my Billy shelves really dirty after a kitchen renovation.

My experience: Start by roughly cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and a microfiber cloth, then use a mild dish soap solution—only very lightly dampened. For the metal parts, I once tried toothpaste! Sounds odd, but rubbed gently with a soft cloth, it made slightly rusted spots shine. Afterwards, wipe everything down with a damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly.

That really is the key. Too much moisture, and suddenly the boards swell. Good luck! 🙂
