Hello everyone, I am currently planning to combine Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with furniture from other series to create a custom and functional setup. My question is: what should I consider during construction and installation when mixing Metod cabinets with non-Metod furniture? Specifically, I am interested in how to smoothly handle differences in height, attachment points, and design transitions. Are there any proven techniques or special connection solutions you would recommend? I am also curious whether it is worth making adjustments when components have different depths, and what key factors to watch out for in that case. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

If the heights don’t match exactly, you can use plinths or decorative strips, as already mentioned. For the connections, you can attach angle brackets from the back; this remains hidden and provides good stability. For the Billy shelves: they should always be anchored to the wall because otherwise the load capacity is not safe, and they do not provide sufficient stability when placed on Metod cabinets. However, you can place them side by side with some spacing and visually connect them using suitable trim pieces that unify the appearance. Are you planning to coordinate the colors of the Pax and Metod cabinet doors?
I generally wonder, when combining different product lines, whether it’s worth customizing every part precisely or if a deliberate design with breaks and contrasts creates a more modern look. You seem to place great importance on seamless transitions, right?
Because if not, varying heights and depths could definitely be used as a design feature. From a technical perspective, I see that the fixing points and stability are always key—and that’s where Ikea components are strong. However, directly connecting Pax and Metod can be challenging since the systems have different carcass increments. My tip would be to use small filler pieces or intermediate wooden frames to conceal the transitions and individually accommodate the different depths and heights.

As a supplement to the previous posts: If you want to connect Metod with other Ikea series, you should definitely start with careful planning of the wall mountings. Metod cabinet units are designed to be securely anchored to the wall, just like Pax and Billy. In my experience, it is essential to use the respective mounting kits and not rely solely on the stability achieved by connecting the furniture pieces to each other. If you switch from Metod to Pax, it can be helpful to remove or modify the back panel of the Pax cabinets to properly attach the mounting brackets. Also, pay attention to the load limits, especially with tall Pax cabinets when used as tall cupboards. The connection to the Metod base cabinet should be designed to properly absorb tensile and shear forces. Are you looking more for technical installation advice, or is your focus on the overall design?
Regarding stability: If you want to connect Pax and Metod cabinets, it is best to build a solid wooden frame between the modules, which serves as a connecting rail. The same applies to Billy shelves. Attach them to the wall, then screw the frame to the cabinets to avoid the risk of tipping.

Have you already considered a room layout or specific furniture collections? That way, we can give you more targeted advice. Yes, I am working with a room size of 3.5 x 4 meters (11.5 x 13 feet), and the kitchen will be installed in an L-shape. The Metod base cabinets will run along one long wall, with Pax tall cabinets placed along the shorter wall. I plan to use Billy shelves as a room divider, to create a semi-open effect with the living area.

It seems you place great importance on seamless transitions, right? That’s correct, since I don’t want a chaotic mix but rather a subtle and high-quality look. Thanks for the tip about using intermediate frames — that sounds like a good solution to conceal the technical elements while maintaining a visually harmonious result.
I’m also curious if anyone has experience with customized fronts or surface laminates to perfectly match the colors of the different collections.
