ᐅ KALLAX exposed to continuous rain outdoors – how long does it actually last?

leju65Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion on the topic: "Kallax in constant outdoor rain – how long does it really last?"
I am considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit on my terrace for storage, but the roof covering is not complete, so the shelf is often exposed to rain, especially during prolonged heavy rainfall.
My specific questions are: How resistant is the KALLAX shelf unit to continuous rain or moisture? Are there any experiences regarding how long it holds up before visible damage appears, such as swelling, discoloration, or even structural issues?
I understand that the material is particleboard with a foil coating, but I suspect that constant moisture could cause problems fairly quickly.
If anyone has used the KALLAX outdoors for an extended period under similar conditions or has tested it, I would appreciate feedback on how the shelf has performed in real-life situations.
Thank you in advance!

At first, I didn’t realize how quickly this can happen, so I would advise not to store the KALLAX unit outdoors without protection – this is often knowledge learned the hard way.
Could you at least cover the shelf with a tarp or a waterproof covering? Otherwise, it’s easy to feel disappointed when a nice piece of furniture gets damaged after a short time :-)

KALLAX is not designed for outdoor use. That was my suspicion, thank you for confirming.

Did the shelf become completely unusable or was it only visually affected? I’m asking because I imagine that stability might also be an important factor for its use.
Many thanks for your honest assessment so far.

Did the shelf become completely unusable or was it only cosmetically affected? Not completely unusable, but its stability decreased significantly, it became increasingly wobbly, and it was heavily damaged in appearance. I would therefore no longer recommend it for outdoor shelving.
As an additional note: The KALLAX shelving unit is made of particleboard with a melamine foil surface, which is water-resistant but not waterproof.
With prolonged exposure to moisture, water can penetrate the particleboard, causing it to swell and lose its load-bearing capacity. Additionally, the fine joints along the edges allow water to be absorbed, further reducing the lifespan.
Tests (see, among others, material test reports for wood-based panels) have shown that particleboard typically begins to deteriorate after just a few weeks up to a maximum of 2-3 months under continuous water exposure.
Therefore, using it outdoors without extra protection or covering is not recommended for long-term durability.
If the patio is covered and the shelving only occasionally gets exposed to splash water, it may last longer; however, sealed surfaces or impregnation treatments are generally advisable.
