teogoHello everyone,
I recently purchased some furniture from the Hemnes series by Ikea and want to clean it as gently as possible without using harsh cleaning agents. My question is: How can I effectively clean Ikea Hemnes furniture without aggressive cleaners, so that the wood and surface are not damaged, but dust, fingerprints, and light dirt are still reliably removed?
I prefer natural or mild products and a method that does not harm the finish or the natural wood grain. Does anyone have good tips or tried-and-true home remedies for this?
Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

You’ve come to the right place 😉!
My secret tip is a mixture of lukewarm water with a splash of vinegar and a drop of mild dish soap. Simply dampen a soft cloth in it, wring it out well (wood doesn’t like standing moisture), and wipe the furniture. Then be sure to go over it again with a dry, soft cloth so no moisture soaks into the wood.
Vinegar is mild and very effective against greasy fingerprints and dirt, but don’t use too much, since vinegar is slightly acidic. The amount of vinegar should be really small—a freshening touch, not a strong treatment.
Alternatively, you can apply some olive oil to a soft cloth and polish the surface to bring back natural shine and nourish it. Just avoid waxes or “high-gloss” products, as they can actually damage HEMNES furniture.
Good luck with the cleaning! 🍀

- Avoid abrasive sponges or coarse brushes, as the surface of HEMNES furniture is specially coated.
- Instead of vinegar, a solution of lukewarm water and a few drops of pH-neutral wood cleaner can also be used.
- Regular cleaning with a damp microfiber cloth gently removes dust.
- For stains, gently apply mild vegetable oil soap solutions or baking soda paste and wipe off immediately.
- Always dry quickly after cleaning, as wood or veneer can be permanently damaged by moisture.
I suggest testing the cleaning agents on an inconspicuous area before applying them to larger surfaces to prevent discoloration or damage.

Here is a more detailed approach:
- Use a soft, clean cloth, preferably microfiber or cotton.
- For cleaning, use lukewarm water and a few drops of a mild, pH-neutral dish detergent.
- Very important: The cloth should be well wrung out to avoid excess moisture on the furniture.
- Wipe the surfaces in the direction of the wood grain to minimize damage.
- For stubborn stains, you can gently apply a mixture of water and a small amount of baking soda—but only briefly and then wipe off immediately.
- Always follow up by wiping with a dry cloth to ensure no moisture remains.
Never use abrasive cleaners, bleach-based products, or alcohol, as they can damage the lacquer.
If you wish, you can occasionally treat the wood surface with a natural oil suitable for wood furniture to protect the finish and maintain its shine. However, the oil layer must be very thin, and any excess oil should be removed immediately.
These gentle cleaning methods help preserve the furniture and ensure a long lifespan.
Hope this helps!
