Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Malm nightstand from Ikea and now face the assembly, which to be honest feels a bit overwhelming. Therefore, my question to the community: Are there any effective tips or proven methods that make assembling the Malm nightstand significantly easier or faster? I’m especially interested in advice on the often fiddly screws and joints, the proper handling of the slats, and whether anyone recommends special tools beyond the included Allen wrench.
It would be great if you could share your experiences, from simple to more advanced tricks. Thanks in advance!

I can definitely confirm that the MALM models require some patience, especially with the smaller parts. A helpful tip during assembly is to initially tighten the screws only by hand. This keeps the furniture piece adjustable and allows for more precise positioning of the parts before fully tightening everything at the end.
Also, it’s worth sorting all the parts and screws into groups before starting the assembly. This prevents having to search for a specific screw later and saves frustration.
Another point: the included Allen wrench is often a bit small. I recommend using a larger metal hex key, which makes screwing much easier and is gentler on your hand.

Good morning,
Regarding the mechanical connections in the MALM nightstand, it can be added that using a cordless drill with an appropriate torque setting is recommended but should be handled carefully. Excessive torque can damage the threads or cause the wood to split.
Additionally, the drill holes are usually pre-made; however, I advise carefully aligning the connecting parts before final tightening.
That makes sense since a better leverage mechanism also reduces strain on the wrists during assembly.

Oh, the classic MALM! I think many of the "tricks" are really just about mindset. All the usual advice, like only tightening screws by hand, are standard rules that every furniture assembler knows.
But honestly: who still assembles furniture strictly "by the book" these days? Why not simply treat the assembly as an experiment? Put screws in the wrong way, try to adjust warped panels, and then just reassemble.
Faster? In my opinion, that’s the wrong approach! Assembly is part of the furniture buying experience. If you’re in a hurry, you should rather have it assembled for you or just choose a different nightstand. ;-)

I believe it’s important to have some fun while assembling! 🙂
A small tip: A little essential oil on a cloth helps with those tricky slats – I swear they slide together more smoothly.
Also: A flexible lamp or headlamp is invaluable – you don’t always have the perfect lighting when working in tight spaces.
And a word about tools: Besides the Allen key, my favorite tool is a small needle-nose pliers – sometimes it’s easier to position or hold screws and anchors when space is limited.
Good luck with the assembly and try not to stress too much! 🙂
