Hello everyone,

I have a question about my IKEA Billy bookshelf: Why does this shelf wobble on uneven floors? I’ve noticed that it starts to wobble noticeably even with minor irregularities. Although the shelves seem quite sturdy, the issue appears to be more related to the floor conditions or the design itself.

I’m especially interested in the physical and structural reasons why the BILLY bookshelf tends to wobble in particular. And even more importantly: How can this wobbling be effectively and permanently fixed? Are there any special tricks or suitable aids to prevent this without having to completely rebuild the shelf?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

The wobbling of the BILLY bookshelf on uneven floors is mainly caused by the lack of adjustability in the feet. The base feet are fixed and cannot be individually adapted to floor irregularities, resulting in an uneven stance and wobbling.

A proven solution is to use furniture glides with rubber pads or special felt pads, which compensate for minor unevenness. For bigger issues, adjustable glides that can be screwed into the base feet are recommended.

Alternatively, the bookshelf can be secured to the wall to provide lateral stability and completely prevent wobbling.

To understand the technical aspect, you need to look at the construction of BILLY: The shelves are designed to stand firmly on flat, solid floors. The feet are not height-adjustable, which means that with slight floor unevenness, only three of the four feet will touch the floor at a time – causing the typical wobbling.

The reason for this is the lack of height adjustability combined with the shelf being relatively lightweight. Even a minimal unevenness is enough to cause wobbling.

I recommend measuring the floor unevenness first with a spirit level. If the difference is only a few millimeters, felt furniture pads applied to the shorter feet often help. For larger differences, I would suggest using replaceable or screw-in adjustable feet.

Also important: Always secure the shelf to the wall. This greatly increases stability against tipping and is clearly recommended in the assembly instructions. This step is often overlooked, and only then does the wobbling really begin.

BILLY wobbles because the feet are not height-adjustable. Solution: add furniture glides underneath or securely fasten it to the wall.

Wobbly BILLY shelves are definitely annoying – I know that all too well! 🙂 My trick: a small rubber pad at the shortest point already makes a big difference. Even better is a bit of tinkering with adjustable felt pads and – to be honest – wall mounting is every BILLY’s best friend. Just a few screws and voilà, it stands firm and secure. This way, the shelf can even ignore uneven floors with confidence 😉

It’s interesting how it is always assumed here that the problem is solely with the floor.

That is basically true, but I would even argue that BILLY is simply a cheap design that has to accept such issues. If it weren’t such an inexpensive piece of furniture, the feet would already be height-adjustable.

You can use DIY solutions, but the problem is symptomatic of the design itself. So: it’s not just the floor, but also the construction that is to blame.

In my opinion, anyone who wants more comfort should avoid shelves like these.
