Hello everyone,

I have a question about my IKEA Billy bookshelf: Why does this shelf wobble on uneven floors? I’ve noticed that it starts to wobble noticeably even with minor irregularities. Although the shelves seem quite sturdy, the issue appears to be more related to the floor conditions or the design itself.

I’m especially interested in the physical and structural reasons why the BILLY bookshelf tends to wobble in particular. And even more importantly: How can this wobbling be effectively and permanently fixed? Are there any special tricks or suitable aids to prevent this without having to completely rebuild the shelf?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I understand that it can be frustrating when the shelf wobbles and feels unstable. When you notice it tipping, you are essentially experiencing an unstable base, which can also pose a safety risk.

Sometimes it helps not to overload the shelf or to distribute the weight more evenly, as this affects stability. Securing the shelf to the wall is truly invaluable because it prevents the shelf from tipping over uncontrollably.

Have you had a chance to measure any unevenness in the floor precisely? Sometimes the solution is very simple, for example, using a thin strip of wood or plastic as a shim underneath.

For clarification: The rocking occurs because BILLY shelves have a rectangular base but only guarantee stable support on a level floor. Every piece of furniture needs at least three points of contact to avoid rocking. On uneven floors, the shelf usually rests on only three feet, which causes this rocking effect.

A detailed solution involves the following steps:

1. First, measure the floor unevenness with a digital level to determine the extent of the differences.
2. For small unevenness (up to about 3 mm (0.12 inches)), felt pads or furniture glides with self-adhesive backing are useful to compensate for the short edges.
3. For larger height differences, it is worth investing in height-adjustable furniture glides that can be screwed into the bottom of the shelf feet. It is advisable to use appropriate screws and wall plugs to ensure stability.
4. Wall mounting should not be forgotten; it is even required in IKEA’s assembly instructions. The shelf can be securely fixed with a simple screw or an angle bracket.

As a final note: The BILLY series was originally designed as a lightweight shelf, not as a heavy piece of furniture for uneven or heavily stressed floors. Accordingly, load and environment should be adjusted.

Do you have specific difficulties, such as very strong floor unevenness or soft flooring? Then additional measures like leveling plates may be necessary.
