Hello everyone,
I have a recurring issue with my Malm furniture from IKEA: the screws keep loosening, even when I tighten them very firmly beforehand. I especially notice this with drawers and shelves, where the screws become loose over time, which of course affects the stability.
I am curious about what might be causing this. Is it due to the quality of the screws or perhaps the assembly method? Or are there particular aspects of Malm furniture that cause screws to loosen more easily?
I would appreciate well-founded explanations and tips, including practical experiences or suggestions on how to permanently solve this problem.

Usually, it’s because the furniture is moved often or the drawers are used frequently, causing small vibrations. These vibrations make the screws loosen over time.
Tip: Try using thread-locking adhesive or what are called thread lockers, which prevent screws from turning on their own! It worked wonders for me!
Don't get discouraged – you’ll definitely manage it! ;-)

Hello Taokan,
to better understand your issue, it’s important to know that Malm furniture is often made from particleboard with a thin plastic laminate or veneer layer. The screws are usually fastened into pre-installed knock-in nuts or metal inserts, which do not always provide the same strength as solid wood joints.
Another reason is that the material can expand and contract slightly due to humidity and temperature changes, which can loosen the screws.
One important tip: always be careful not to overtighten the screws to avoid damaging the material, and if necessary, secure the knock-in nuts with wood glue or special repair kits.
This won’t solve every problem, but it can help improve the durability of the connections.

A precise analysis:
The repeated loosening of screws in Malm furniture is a common issue caused by two main factors:
1. Material and fastenings: Malm furniture is primarily made of particleboard, which as a base material has lower density and reduced tensile and holding strength for screws. The combination of particleboard and metal knock-in nuts can, over time, allow micro-movements that loosen the screws.
2. Mechanical stress: Everyday movements, such as wood bending under load, vibrations from opening and closing drawers, and temperature fluctuations, lead to material fatigue.
My advice: Use thread-locking compounds (e.g., medium-strength Loctite) and regularly check for tighter fastening. Retightening after a short settling period can also be helpful, as the material compresses.
If possible, use alternative fastening methods (wood dowels, glue) for partially disassemblable models when a permanent connection is required.

Material and fastening: Malm furniture is mainly made of particleboardThat’s absolutely true, and that’s exactly why it keeps coming loose for me as well. 🙂
I had the same problem before until I switched to using Loctite and thread locker. Just apply a medium-strength threadlocker to the screws. Since then, they have held for a year without needing to be retightened!
Just give it a try—it really saves time and frustration!
