Hello everyone,
I recently bought some Malm furniture from IKEA, specifically dressers and nightstands, and I noticed that the drawers are quite noisy every time they are opened and closed. The squeaking and creaking can be really bothersome, especially at night when it’s supposed to be quiet. I’m interested in learning about ways to make these Malm pieces quieter. I mean specifically mechanical improvements, materials, or simple adjustments that can reduce the noise. I’m mainly looking for a long-lasting and easy solution that isn’t too expensive. Does anyone have experience with this or good tips? Thanks in advance!

To reduce noise in Malm furniture, I recommend first checking the drawer slides. Squeaking often occurs due to friction on metal slides or low-quality plastic glides. A thin lubricant like silicone spray or a special drawer lubricant can work wonders. Use it sparingly to avoid any residue on the wood or clothing.
Alternatively, you can replace the slides with higher-quality glide rails. This is more involved but much more effective. Attaching felt or foam rubber strips at the drawer contact points can also dampen vibrations. There are specially cut foam or rubber pads designed to reduce metal-on-wood friction.

A small tip: Don’t spray too much, or it will drip and attract dust. If it gets too slippery, just wipe off a bit with a paper towel. It works great and is quick to do!
It’s amazing that you can achieve this with such simple materials like lubricants and felt!!! 🙂 I also treated my Malm dresser, and it’s hard to believe how quiet it is now.
If you enjoy DIY projects: I also attached small felt adhesive strips to the sides of the drawers where they meet the wood. This cushions and dampens perfectly. Opening the drawers feels really soft and smooth! ;-)

Hello everyone!
A structured approach to reducing noise in Malm furniture is as follows:
1. Cleaning: First, remove dust and dirt from the metal runners and drawers.
2. Lubrication: Silicone spray works better than traditional oils because it doesn’t become sticky or attract dust.
3. Cushioning: Foam rubber or felt strips applied to the contact areas between the drawer and the frame absorb squeaking sounds.
4. Checking screws: Make sure none are loose.
This usually results in significant improvements.
Additionally, some users have switched to softer rollers on the drawers, if applicable. By carefully measuring the dimensions, you can find suitable replacement parts.
If desired, you can also record a short video showing the issue (without uploading it here) and then search forums specifically for similar situations.
