Hello everyone,

I plan to assemble a Malm furniture piece from Ikea that has always had an issue in my apartment with so-called vibration pulsations—small, unpleasant vibrations or slight movements that make the furniture appear unstable. My main question is: What specific steps or measures do you recommend to assemble Malm furniture so that it is free of pulsations and stable? I am interested both in the situation on uneven floors and possible improvements in connecting the individual parts to completely eliminate vibrations. Which mistakes should I definitely avoid, and are there any tips for tools or materials I could use in addition to the Ikea parts? I would appreciate any advice to ensure the furniture stands completely steady in the end.

Best regards!

Hey teoje60,

first of all, great question! It can be really annoying when a piece of furniture keeps vibrating – nobody wants an indoor mini disco happening ;-)

I’ve assembled Malm dressers myself before, and I always made sure that the feet were perfectly flat on the floor. Floors often aren’t completely level, which causes the furniture to wobble. A simple but effective solution is to place small felt pads under the feet – the same kind used for chairs. This helps the furniture stand much more steadily with less vibration, as it increases the contact area and cushions any unevenness.

Also: Don’t tighten the screws too much, or the furniture becomes stressed and can’t “relax.” But don’t leave them too loose either! A bit of feel and experience makes all the difference.

A quick tip: Foam or rubber pads between joints can also help absorb light vibrations. Good luck! 🙂

Malm furniture is often unstable due to uneven floors. Make sure all fasteners are securely tightened. Use felt or rubber pads under the legs. Avoid over-tightening screws.

Hello teoje60,

Your question indicates that you are experiencing vibrations, which are usually caused by uneven floors and low material stiffness. To mount the Malm furniture completely free of vibrations, you need to proceed systematically:

1. Alignment: Use a spirit level to check not only the horizontal position but also whether each leg is fully in contact with the floor. If not, you can use small shims or wooden wedges to ensure full support.

2. Connection technique: The typical Minifix screws from Ikea provide firm hold but can cause the furniture to vibrate if tightened too much or too little. Make sure all fasteners are tightened evenly. Uneven pressure creates tension that encourages vibrations.

3. Adding damping elements: A narrow strip of neoprene or rubber gasket inserted between cross connections can significantly reduce unwanted vibrations.

4. Leg design: If possible, modify the underside of the legs—either by using special self-leveling furniture feet or by gluing rubber buffers on.

5. Test: Move the furniture to identify any flexing points and then retighten the screws.

One step many overlook is checking the bearing surfaces of screws and dowels. If the dowels in the particleboard are too loose, the connection will eventually move. Occasional repair with wood glue or replacing the dowels can stabilize it.

I am interested in what kind of floor the furniture is standing on and whether you have already made any adjustments yourself. This information could help provide more targeted recommendations.

Best regards!

Thanks for the detailed reply, Ernesto! The furniture is on a laminate floor, which has some slight unevenness, so it isn’t perfectly flat. So far, I have only (very) loosely adjusted the screws to reduce the rocking effect but haven’t made any other modifications. I find your idea of using neoprene or rubber gaskets interesting—do you have specific recommendations on how thick they should be and exactly where to place them (between which parts)? I definitely don’t want to spoil the appearance, so they should be as discreet as possible.

Also, I’m considering replacing the usual felt pads with a better alternative, as those tend to slip occasionally.

For effective damping, I recommend rubber strips with a thickness of 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches). Ideally, these should be installed at the contact surfaces between the wooden components where screws or other fasteners are located, especially on the cross braces and connection plates.

The strips can either be cut to size or purchased as ready-made rubber gaskets at a hardware store. It is important that they lie flat with no air gaps, as this improves damping. Make sure to install the gaskets so they remain hidden—for example, recessed within the screw connections.

It is also advisable to apply medium-strength threadlocker to the screws to prevent them from loosening later, which can increase vibrations.

Additionally, check that the base at the support points is solid and clean. Dust or small irregularities can cause rocking.

These measures help ensure a stable and vibration-free assembly.
