plofolker25 Jul 2020 09:36Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe and want to make sure I have all the necessary tools ready before I start building. Therefore, my question is: Which tools are essential for assembling the Ikea Pax and why?
I am especially interested in whether, besides the included tools (such as the Allen key), there are additional tools recommended that can make assembly easier or improve stability. It is important for me to work as efficiently and precisely as possible, without any risks during screwing or adjusting the wardrobe parts.
Maybe someone with experience can share what to look out for and which tools are really indispensable, especially if you don’t have a professional carpenter’s toolkit at home.
Thanks in advance for sharing your tips!

Hello plofolker,
first of all, I think it’s great that you want to gather detailed information beforehand – this saves a lot of frustration!
For assembling the Ikea Pax wardrobe, the following tools are essential and very helpful:
- The included Allen wrench: definitely sufficient for most of Ikea’s fasteners.
- A cordless drill with a suitable Torx or Phillips bit: replaces the Allen wrench for screws that require extra force and makes screwing in much easier. This saves time and protects your hands.
- A rubber mallet: to carefully fit components together without damaging the surface.
- A tape measure or ruler: to precisely align the wardrobe, especially when mounting it to the wall.
- A spirit level: very important for a straight installation, since even a slight angle can later cause problems with tall Pax parts.
Yes, extra tools can make the assembly much more comfortable and improve the overall quality.
If you plan to use this wardrobe system more often, it’s worth investing in some basic tools.
Good luck with the assembly! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Hello everyone,
I would like to elaborate a bit more on Laurence’s points because when assembling the Ikea Pax wardrobe, many small details are crucial, especially regarding the precision and strength of the connection points.
1. Screwdriver / Cordless drill:
A high-quality cordless drill with adjustable torque is extremely valuable. This is especially important when you want to screw in the sometimes quite tight screws (for example, the large bottom supports or connection screws) optimally without damaging the material. A torque of 10-12 Nm (7-9 lb-ft) is more than enough to prevent over-tightening and tearing out of the chipboard panels.
2. Pre-drilling tool:
Depending on the substrate and individual adjustments, it can be helpful to pre-drill with a thin drill bit before screwing in order to ensure the screws grip cleanly and the panels don’t split.
3. Rubber mallet:
I also strongly recommend using a rubber mallet. It often happens that the individual parts fit quite tightly. With a light, non-damaging tap, the wardrobe can be assembled smoothly.
4. Measuring tape and spirit level:
It shouldn’t be the cheapest version here: even a small inaccuracy in the spirit level can lead to major alignment issues. Taking wall mounting as an example: I would recommend working as precisely as possible because a large piece of furniture like this can easily develop tilt points if the mounting is not completely level.
5. Clamps (optional):
If you’re working alone and want to hold several parts securely in place, clamps can save a lot of time and frustration. They keep parts stable and fixed on both sides while you screw.
I’m curious: Did you plan to mount the wardrobe directly to the wall or have it freestanding? That could also expand the list of tools, for example when drilling and using wall anchors / plugs.
I hope these tips help you further!
