Hello everyone,

I am considering customizing my Kallax shelf with acrylic paint to give it a more personal touch. My specific question is: Does the paint adhere well to the surface of the Kallax shelf in the long term, especially with everyday use?

I have read that the Kallax is made of coated particleboard, and I wonder if acrylic paint sticks well without any special preparation, or if specific primers or sealants are needed to achieve a durable finish that won’t peel or get damaged quickly.

Additionally, I am interested in your experiences regarding the durability, especially with wear such as wiping, stacking, and regular use.

Looking forward to your insights and tips!

Without proper preparation, the paint will hardly last long. It’s best to lightly sand the surface first, then use a primer. After that, apply acrylic paint and seal it with a clear varnish – this will ensure good durability.

The surface of the KALLAX is usually made of melamine-coated particleboard, which makes paint adhesion challenging because melamine hardly absorbs any paint. Therefore, I recommend first lightly sanding the surface with very fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer). Afterward, applying a special primer is important to ensure the acrylic paint bonds permanently.

Acrylic paint alone does not provide good abrasion resistance, so a final seal with a matte or glossy clear coat—a polyurethane-based product would be ideal—is highly recommended all around. This layer protects the shelf from wear caused by regular cleaning or minor impacts.

If you are only decorating certain areas, make sure the entire treated area is sealed, as this prevents uneven wear. How heavily do you plan to use the shelf? Will it be placed in a high-traffic environment, or mainly serve a decorative purpose?

Sometimes, an acrylic varnish alone may be sufficient if use is minimal, but for long-lasting durability, you should not skip the steps described above.

For clarification: Melamine resin-coated surfaces have a very smooth, chemically resistant texture that makes direct adhesion of water-based acrylic paint difficult.

The correct procedure includes:

1. Sanding with fine sandpaper to reduce smoothness and create mechanical bonding points.
2. Using a primer designed for adhesion, preferably acrylic-based, to prepare the surface for painting.
3. Applying several thin layers of acrylic paint to achieve color depth.
4. Finally sealing with a suitable clear coat (polyurethane is preferred due to its scratch resistance).

This method ensures a wear-resistant, durable paint film that can withstand daily use on a KALLAX unit.

Alternatives include specialized veneer paints or coatings suitable for melamine surfaces if acrylic paint alone is not sufficient.

This question is crucial because the level of use determines the choice of materials and the preparation needed.

If the shelf will be moved often or handled regularly and cleaned frequently with a damp cloth, the steps described by Filippo are essential. For purely decorative use without much physical stress, a simple primer and paint application with sealing might be sufficient, but it will offer less durability.

For better longevity, attention should also be paid to the drying times of each product, as proceeding too quickly can weaken the paint film.

Exactly. You can’t expect paint from the tube to simply adhere to the melamine surface. Preparation is key.

Additionally, drying must be done properly, meaning in a dust-free, well-ventilated area. And hands off during drying.
