Hello everyone,
I recently installed a disco light on my KALLAX Ikea cabinet, which looks great overall. However, I’ve noticed that the previously white surface has developed a slight yellowish tint or appears discolored after prolonged exposure to the strong, colored lighting. This bothers me visually, and I’m wondering if there is a way to selectively brighten or bleach the yellowed areas without damaging the surface.
Does anyone have experience with cases like this? What methods or products are suitable for removing yellowing from melamine or plastic surfaces like those on the KALLAX? Are there any home remedies or professional treatments that are effective? I would really appreciate tips that actually work and won’t ruin the furniture. Thanks in advance!

The formerly white surface has yellowed over time due to extended exposure to strong lights.Try using 3% hydrogen peroxide, apply carefully and let it sit. Then wipe it off thoroughly. This often works without causing damage.

Some KALLAX models are melamine-coated, and aggressive bleaching can cause damage.
Alternatively, special plastic cleaners or polish products designed for plastics are recommended, as they provide UV protection and can help slow down yellowing.

All that bleaching stuff can end up damaging the surface, leaving you with furniture that has spots and no longer feels like the original.
Honestly, the effort usually isn’t worth it—perhaps it’s better to apply a white topcoat or paint right away? Don’t get me wrong, but I often find such repair attempts more trouble than they’re worth.
Who knows, maybe it will work. But I remain skeptical, especially regarding the long-term effect.

I once read that a paste made from baking soda and water, applied and gently rubbed in, then rinsed off, can slightly lighten the surface.
Of course, avoid scrubbing too hard to prevent any damage. No aggressive scrubbing!
A little homemade care remedy can sometimes work wonders and gives you confidence before applying a topcoat :-)
Maybe this helps.
