Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA that I want to place on a fairly uneven wooden floorboard. The floor is visibly sloped in some areas, which causes the shelf to be unstable and wobble at times. My question is: what practical solutions do you know to level the KALLAX shelf and securely position it on a severely sloped wooden floorboard? I have already considered small pads, wooden strips, or adjustable feet, but I’m unsure what will hold up firmly over time without damaging the floor or the shelf. I would be very grateful for tips and experiences regarding this specific issue with uneven wooden floorboards!

Hello nonje,

First of all, a general tip: The problem with a warped wooden plank floor is that the unevenness is often spread over small areas, and simple supports are usually not enough to stabilize the shelf.

What I would recommend is a multi-step approach: First, you should use a small spirit level set or a laser level to check the exact degree and direction of the slope. This will help you identify the right spot for leveling.

A quite practical solution is adjustable furniture feet, which you can attach to the bottom side of the Kallax. This allows you to individually set how much one side of the shelf is raised.

Alternatively, you can also combine thin cork or felt pads with wooden strips segment by segment to balance out specific points. But be careful: these should be firmly glued in place to prevent shifting.

It’s also important not to damage the floor protection, so choose materials that are soft enough to prevent scratches but sturdy enough to bear the load. Cork pads or felt are often the best choice here.

I’m curious: How strong is the slope? Large height differences of more than 1cm (0.4 inches) should ideally be compensated with adjustable feet.

In short: Place suitable furniture glides with threaded inserts under the feet of the KALLAX shelf and adjust the height. Done.

Hi nonje,

I completely understand the problem – a wobbly shelf is no fun, especially if you use it every day. What worked really well for me was placing small wooden wedges under the feet, trimmed to fit beforehand. They’re inexpensive, easy to fix in place, and served me well before I installed adjustable feet. And honestly, it doesn’t look that bad if you add a bit of paint or varnish.

Oh, and yes, it’s better to use felt or rubber-tipped wedges so they don’t scratch the floor. 🙂 Good luck!

I completely agree. Additionally, a sturdy substructure can help, such as wooden shims that you screw under the furniture to restore levelness. It is advisable to use strong, non-compressible wood for this purpose.

The installation of such leveling components should be easily adjustable to accommodate any future changes in the floor conditions. I would also recommend using a non-slip underlay between the shelving unit and the floor to prevent slipping.

Hello everyone,

I understand how frustrating a warped floorboard can be, especially when you want to trust your shelf to stay stable. I experienced something similar and was initially worried about damaging the floor if I used the wrong materials.

My advice: work with small rubber pads that you can easily stick under the feet. They provide some cushioning without scratching the floor and don’t slide around—especially since wood flooring can expand and contract slightly with temperature changes. It takes a bit of patience to find the right combination, but it’s definitely worth it.

Keep your spirits up; you’ll handle it well!
