Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelves and considering adding metal shelf supports to increase stability and give the design a more industrial look. My question is quite specific: Has anyone had experience retrofitting metal shelf supports for KALLAX shelves? I am particularly interested in the installation process, everyday durability, and any compatibility issues with the KALLAX inserts. Are there recommendations for specific manufacturers or models? Are there challenges or pitfalls that should definitely be avoided?
I look forward to your feedback and tips!

Briefly, my experience: metal floor joists are possible but not ideal. The best way to attach them to KALLAX is with short screws that do not penetrate the material. I used L-brackets fixed on the inside of the sides. For heavy loads, I would prefer polymer or sturdy wooden beams.
Hello glamau,
Your question about retrofitting metal shelf supports for KALLAX is very well asked and important for anyone who values stability. I have retrofitted a KALLAX with metal supports myself and can share some insights from personal experience:
I ordered the metal parts from a specialized furniture fitting supplier. There are some affordable L-shaped brackets made of galvanized steel that can also be easily adjusted by hand. My tip: Always carefully mark the drill holes before screwing them in and pre-drill with a thin drill bit to avoid splitting the MDF.
Proper alignment is crucial so that the shelf rests fully and the load is not applied only at specific points. For aesthetics, you can paint the edges of the metal supports black to match an industrial style.
In general, metal supports noticeably increase the load capacity, as long as you don’t place excessively heavy items on individual shelves. For everyday use, they are definitely a useful addition.

The brackets hold well under normal use. This probably means that excessive loads should not be placed on the KALLAX shelves. The metal supports are not designed for heavy-duty shelving but offer a solid improvement compared to wooden supports.
