Hello everyone, I currently have a problem cleaning my IKEA KALLAX shelf, specifically the hard-to-reach corners – the inner edges and joints where dust, crumbs, and sometimes sticky residues tend to accumulate. Regular dust cloths or rags just don’t reach these areas properly, and I prefer not to use sharp objects to avoid damaging the material.

I’m wondering if anyone here knows a proven method, a special cleaning tool, or a home remedy that works well for cleaning these tricky corners of the KALLAX gently and effectively?

I would really appreciate practical tips that are both efficient and easy to apply.

Use a small, soft brush, such as an old toothbrush, which gets into all the tight spots without causing any damage. Afterwards, wipe down with a microfiber cloth.

I’m familiar with this issue because the joints in the KALLAX unit tend to collect a lot of dirt and are hard to access. I recommend trying cleaning blades or a flat brush – these are flexible and can reach into deep crevices. It’s best to slightly moisten them with a mild dish soap, which also helps remove sticky residues effectively.

If you don’t have special brushes, cotton swabs work very precisely as well. Just make sure they aren’t too wet to avoid introducing moisture into the wood. Following up with a dry cloth helps prevent any moisture damage.

Using this approach allows you to clean the corners thoroughly and gently. If you do this regularly, it also helps prevent dirt buildup over time.

Another effective tip is to remove the coarse dirt first using a vacuum cleaner attachment designed for narrow gaps. Some vacuum cleaners have very slim nozzles made specifically for this purpose.

After that, you can use a small, soft brush—like a paintbrush with fine bristles—to loosen the dirt. It is important that the cleaning agent is mild and suitable for wood or particleboard to avoid damaging the surface of the KALLAX.

If you often struggle with such corners, it might also be useful to regularly wipe these areas with a laminate cleaner applied dry, to prevent moisture from penetrating.

In short: vacuum, brush, and spot-clean with a mild agent under controlled moisture conditions—this works very well in the long term.
