OnpebarHello everyone,
I would like to ask a detailed question that some of you might have already considered: How can Ikea Hemnes furniture be best protected from the negative effects of direct sunlight and high heat?
I have several Hemnes dressers and shelves in my home, which are made of solid pine wood and have a relatively smooth lacquer finish. However, I have noticed that after prolonged exposure to sunlight, some areas tend to fade slightly and even appear somewhat more brittle.
Beyond the visual aspect, I am also concerned about preventing damage to the material or warping, since wood naturally expands and contracts with heat, and the lacquer might deteriorate.
Therefore, I am looking for practical advice and perhaps experiences with effective measures or products to protect the furniture in the long term—such as special UV protection films for windows, protective coatings, covers, furniture placement, or other approaches.
I am very interested to hear which solutions you would recommend and if there are any tips regarding cleaning or maintenance to ensure the protection is preserved.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

To protect Ikea Hemnes furniture from sunlight and heat, I recommend a multi-step approach:
- First, direct exposure to UV rays is the most damaging, as they can fade the wood finish and also break down cross-linked coating layers. UV protection films on the windows are therefore one of the most effective measures. There are special filter films that block 99% of UV light while remaining transparent.
- When it comes to heat, it is important that the wood remains well ventilated, as heat and moisture combined can cause the wood to swell or crack. In any case, Hemnes furniture should not be placed directly in front of radiators or strongly heated areas.
- For the furniture itself, an additional clear coat with UV-enhancing wood varnish can help, provided the application instructions from Ikea are followed and nothing that damages the surface is used. However, be aware that some sealants can alter the original appearance. Therefore, test first in an inconspicuous spot.
- Cleaning should be done gently with a damp cloth; avoid aggressive or harsh cleaners, as these can damage the protective film.
One more question: How strong is the sunlight in your apartment, and at what times does it shine? This could be relevant when choosing the right measures.

UV protection films on the windows are indeed one of the most effective measures.Absolutely! I’ve used films myself and can definitely confirm that. 🙂
Another tip: If possible, lower curtains or blinds as soon as the sun is at its strongest. This way, you can easily protect your Hemnes furniture.
And don’t worry: the wood is quite sturdy, and with a little care, you’ll enjoy it for a long time! Keep at it—it’s really worth it!

I appreciate that you are approaching this issue so thoughtfully and giving your furniture the attention it deserves.
Sometimes you have to try out what works best. For me, combinations of UV-protective film and subtle furniture covers have proven effective against strong sunlight. However, be careful with the covers: they should be breathable, otherwise moisture can build up, which can also damage the wood.
I hope you find a solution that fits well into your daily life. Sometimes small steps can make a big difference. Good luck!
