Hello everyone, I have the following problem: My KALLAX shelf has recently been placed in the basement, and I am increasingly concerned that mice might get into it or even chew on it. Are there any proven methods you use to protect your KALLAX from mice in the basement? I am looking for concrete tips, whether about materials, placement, barriers, or special devices. It is especially important to me that the solution is sustainable and does not damage the shelf itself. What are your experiences?

I regularly use cat carriers, especially in the basement, so the shelf is placed on a platform, and underneath there is some cat litter. Mice don’t like that. It also helps to keep food or paper well sealed.

To protect the KALLAX shelving unit in the basement, I recommend the following: First, check that the basement has no entry points for rodents, such as cracks in the walls or floor.

Place metal sheets or stainless steel mesh under the shelving unit to prevent gnawing.

Additionally, scents like peppermint oil can be effective in some cases, as mice dislike strong odors. Another tip: do not store food or materials that attract mice on the shelves.

This combination significantly increases protection against damage caused by mice.

I can confirm that! It worked great for us in the basement – just a few drops on cotton pads placed around the shelves were enough. And if the idea of using metal sheets sounds too much like a construction site, you can also use boards covered with wire mesh. At home, it’s always a bit of a cat-and-mouse game ;-)

That may be true, but can we really rely on natural scents to work long-term? Mice are very adaptable.

More important is to first reduce their access to the basement areas, for example by sealing all openings. Relying on scents alone seems too uncertain to me. Does anyone have experience with mechanical barriers directly on the KALLAX?

Mechanical barriers are indeed the most effective solution against mouse infestations in the KALLAX shelving unit. I placed my shelves on sturdy mesh frames to prevent small animals from passing through. Additionally, I filled all cavities inside the carcass with foam, which not only provides insulation but also makes chewing more difficult.

Regarding odors: use strong scents like peppermint oil as a supplement, but don’t rely on them exclusively.

It is also important to regularly inspect the entire basement and avoid storing any food residues there. Cleanliness and proper sealing of the basement are fundamental for protecting the KALLAX unit successfully.
