luglaHello everyone,
I am currently working on improving the lighting inside my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to noticeably increase daily convenience. I have already seen the standard LED strips offered by Ikea, but I wonder if there are more functional or efficient solutions that really make a difference in everyday use, especially when you need to quickly find ingredients or cooking utensils.
I am particularly interested in the following points:
- What types of lighting systems are most practical for Metod cabinets and why?
- How can the light source be best installed to minimize shadows while remaining energy-efficient?
- Are there smart control options, such as motion sensors or automatic switches for cabinet doors?
- What about the durability and maintenance of the lighting – are certain products preferable?
I have several cabinets with different depths and want the lighting to be ideally suited to each cabinet type. I would appreciate any thoughts, experiences, or recommendations you have on this topic!

What types of lighting systems are most practical for Metod cabinets and why?For Metod kitchen cabinets, I generally recommend slim LED light strips with a low profile, as they are easy to install and provide even illumination. The most commonly used options are:
- 12 V LED light strips for low heat generation and safety
- Battery-powered, wireless LED lights for retrofitting without extensive wiring work
- Cabinet interior spotlights with motion sensors for targeted lighting

What is the best way to position the light source to minimize shadows while maintaining energy efficiency?Mounting the lights on the underside of the upper cabinet level is ideal, as this illuminates the entire interior well. The LEDs should be installed at an angle that directs light toward the back wall of the cabinet to reduce shadows along the sides.
Motion sensors or door switches with automatic turn-off enhance convenience and help preserve battery life or power supply.

What about the durability and maintenance of the lighting – should certain products be preferred?Products from reputable manufacturers featuring long-lasting LEDs (at least 30,000 operating hours) and an adequate protection rating (IP44 or higher for damp environments) are recommended. Make sure to choose options with straightforward wiring to enable quick maintenance.

Mounting underneath the top cabinet shelf is ideal, as it provides good illumination throughout the entire interior. That’s exactly what I’ve done at home too – and I have to say, cooking in the evening is much more relaxed when you’re no longer fumbling around in the dark! 😄
What I find brilliant about the Ikea light strips is the clever installation with adhesive pads and clips – it makes the setup really easy and clean. For extra convenience, I added smart sensors that turn on the lights as soon as I open the cabinet. No more blindly feeling around! 👌
For anyone looking for something more, I highly recommend using a slightly warmer light color. It reduces glare and creates a much cozier atmosphere. Plus, you save energy if you use dimmable LEDs!
In short:
- LED strips under the top cabinet shelf
- Motion sensors for automatic control
- Warm white LEDs for pleasant lighting
And no, this is not an advertisement, just a practical tip from experience 😊

Are there smart control options, for example with motion sensors or automatic switches for the cabinet doors?Yes, I can definitely recommend magnetic switches and PIR motion sensors. Magnetic switches are easy to install on the cabinet frame and turn on the light as soon as the door opens.
PIR motion sensors detect movement inside the cabinet and can keep the light on with a delay, for example if a hand briefly reaches in.
Additionally, the LED system should ideally use a power supply with overheating protection to prevent damage during continuous operation.
In my experience, a combination of LED light strips with magnetic switches offers the most convenient everyday solution – simple, reliable, and low-maintenance.
