Hello everyone,

I’m interested in ways to change the color of the Ikea Hemnes furniture series using simple, DIY methods. I’m not only looking at traditional painting but also creative techniques that can refresh the wood or completely give it a new look—without losing the typical style or needing extensive professional equipment.

My questions to the community are: Which materials work best for color transformation (e.g., paints, stains, waxes)? Are spray paints a good option or rather risky for Hemnes? How can you achieve a durable, attractive finish with minimal effort and low budget? And are there any experiences with special surface treatments that particularly protect the wood while allowing the color to adhere well?

I’m looking forward to your tips and appreciate as many detailed suggestions and personal experiences as possible! Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time.

Hey, great question! I recently treated my Hemnes wardrobe with chalk paint – it looked great and was pretty easy to do. You just need to sand the surface well, then the paint adheres perfectly.

Spray paints also work if you tape off carefully. They’re especially good for small corners and edges, but I’d recommend applying a primer first to ensure long-lasting results.

Sand first, then use chalk paint or acrylic paint from a hardware store, and finally apply a clear wax or matte varnish. This keeps everything durable and stylish – it also saved me money!

Keep me updated on how it goes for you! DIY is really fun 😄

Hello keo65,

I find your idea of changing the color of the Hemnes furniture piece in a DIY style very interesting, as there are really many possibilities. An important first step is surface preparation.

- Before painting or staining, make sure to sand the furniture well to remove old protective layers and roughen the surface.
- Water-based acrylic paints work well for applying color since they have low odor and adhere nicely to wood.
- Stains, on the other hand, primarily change the wood’s appearance, so if you want to preserve the grain, they are ideal.
- Waxes or clear varnishes serve as protective layers and provide either a matte or glossy finish, depending on the product.

Spray paints can work on Hemnes furniture but carry the risk of uneven surfaces and drips, especially without the right experience and masking preparation.

Regarding your question about durable results: after painting or staining, I recommend sealing with a water-based clear varnish or furniture wax to protect the color from wear and moisture.

If you prefer a more natural look, chalk paints are also a good option and can be sealed with wax after drying.

I hope this helps!

To complement the previous explanations, here are some precise recommendations:

The Hemnes series is mostly made of painted pine wood; the existing paint layer can be largely removed by sanding or using a paint stripper. This is crucial because new paint layers will chip quickly without proper adhesion.

- Sand the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 180 to 220) and thoroughly remove the dust.
- Prime the wood with a wood primer or bonding agent to ensure secure adhesion of the paint.
- For painting, water-based varnishes or acrylic paints are recommended, as they dry well and are durable.
- Alternatively, stains can be used; these blend with the wood color but offer less coverage.
- Finally, protect the surface with a clear topcoat (matte or glossy, depending on preference) specifically designed for furniture.

Spray paints are convenient but carry the risk of drips and uneven surfaces on furniture with edges and details. Professional spraying technique is advisable; otherwise, it is better to use a brush or roller.

A budget-friendly yet durable approach is the combination of sanding – priming – acrylic paint – clear topcoat.

These steps ensure a long-lasting and visually appealing color transformation of your Hemnes furniture.

That’s absolutely true. I would always recommend testing a little first before spraying the entire piece of furniture. A bit of sanding and priming can really make a difference!

I’ve also had good results using wax on chalk paint; it adds a great texture and provides excellent protection. Especially with DIY projects, it’s really enjoyable to work on the surface and create a truly unique finish.

If you’re interested, I’d suggest experimenting with lighter shades, which highlight the typical Scandinavian style of Hemnes nicely, but you can also choose stronger colors—whatever suits your taste!

Don’t worry, you’ll do great. Just take your time, experiment, and have fun!
