Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to reorganize my book collection and came across the BILLY series from IKEA. Since there are many different models and variations, I would like to know: which BILLY models are best suited for storing books?
I am mainly concerned with stability, adjustable shelves, and efficient use of space. I am also interested in factors such as the maximum load capacity of the shelves, possible expansions (e.g., with doors or extension units), and dust protection.
What experiences have you had, and what would you recommend? Are there models that might be less suitable for larger collections?
Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

Which BILLY models are best suited for book storage?Your question is very well-defined, which is very helpful for the discussion.
For orientation: the classic BILLY bookcases are available in a standard height of 202 cm (79.5 inches), with widths of 80 cm (31.5 inches) or 40 cm (15.7 inches). For storing books, I almost always recommend the 80 cm (31.5 inches) version, as it is more stable and offers more shelf space.
An important factor is the maximum load capacity of the shelves: it is about 30 kg (66 lbs). If your books tend to be heavy, I advise not to fully load the shelves.
There is flexibility with the shelves, as they are height-adjustable in 3 cm (1.2 inches) increments. This allows you to optimally store large coffee table books alongside slim paperbacks.
Extensions with doors are particularly useful for dust-sensitive books. The glass doors (Pax compatible) also make the unit look more premium and protect against dirt.
If you have a lot of books, combinations with narrower 40 cm (15.7 inches) bookcases are recommended, since they fit well in narrow spaces and save room beside the standard bookcases.
Summary:
1. BILLY 80x202 cm (31.5x79.5 inches) for maximum capacity
2. Use height-adjustable shelves
3. Doors for dust protection (optional)
4. 40 cm (15.7 inches) version for flexible additions
Hope this helps you for now!

I once made the mistake of filling a 40 cm (15.7 inches) BILLY fully with heavy reference books – after a while, the shelves started to sag slightly. That was really annoying because I was always worried something might break.

By the way, I really like doors because they protect the books from dust and make the shelf look more elegant – I have glass doors so you can still see what is inside.
If your budget is a bit tight, you might consider buying the BILLY shelves as sets with tops or as corner units. The corner units add extra stability and make good use of space if you want to set up your reading area efficiently.
Hope this helps 🙂

Which BILLY models are best suited for storing books?A precise answer requires considering the requirements for load capacity, modularity, and protection separately.
1. Load Capacity: The standard shelves of the BILLY bookcase support a load of about 30 kg per shelf. Overloading quickly leads to sagging and potential deformation. Model versions with narrower shelves (40 cm (16 inches)) sometimes offer lower load capacity, so heavy volumes should be stored preferably in the 80-cm (31-inch) version.
2. Modularity: The advantage of the BILLY system lies in its expandability. Models with additional upper shelves or combinations with glass doors are recommended. The doors protect against dust and increase the lifespan of the book collection.
3. Protection: For valuable collections, the version with glass doors (depending on the model) is advisable. These models offer dust protection and minimize moisture exposure, which carries higher risks in untreated shelves without doors.
In conclusion, I recommend the following models:
- BILLY 80 x 202 cm (31 x 79 inches) with adjustable shelves
- BILLY with glass doors and additional upper shelf, if dust protection is desired
- Secondary use of 40-cm (16-inch) models as supplements for light or small books
Using adjustable feet to adapt to uneven floors also improves stability.

A precise answer to the question requires separately considering the requirements for load capacity, modularity, and protective function. That’s true, but I would also add that not only the load capacity of the shelves is important, but also the overall stability of the unit.
In some cases, users rely on reinforcements or additional screws because the BILLY system reaches its limits with very large quantities and heavy contents. Especially when using tall shelves without wall mounting, there is a tipping risk due to weight and height.
Furthermore, the importance of the material of the back panel is often underestimated in the forum.

For me, stability, adjustable shelves, and good space utilization are the main priorities.Honestly, I have some doubts about the load capacities stated by IKEA – in my experience, the shelves start to sag slightly on an ongoing basis from around 25 kg (55 lbs).
If the collection is very large, a more professional shelving system might be better, but for private use, BILLY shelves remain an affordable option.
PS: What do you think about the new BILLY version with the metal back panel? Has anyone tried it?
