Hello everyone, I am planning a move soon and want to transport my IKEA Malm furniture safely. My question is: How can I secure Malm furniture during moves to prevent damage such as loose fittings, scratches, or even pieces coming apart? I am especially interested in practical tips for securing drawers, doors, and ensuring the overall stability of the furniture while carrying it and inside the moving truck. Are there any proven methods or special accessories that work particularly well? Thanks in advance for your advice!
Hello Dikau, I’m happy to provide you with a detailed guide on how to safely secure Malm furniture during moves.
1. First, completely empty all drawers and doors.
2. You should secure the drawers so they don’t slide out during transport. You can do this by applying wide tape across the drawers, or by removing the drawers entirely and packing them separately.
3. Check hinges and screws: Before the move, inspect all screws to ensure they are tight. If necessary, tighten them again for better stability.
4. Protect furniture surfaces from scratches: Wrap the furniture well with moving blankets or bubble wrap. Make sure to especially cushion the edges carefully.
5. For transport in a truck, secure the furniture with tie-down straps to prevent shifting.
A common mistake is not securing the drawers, which can quickly lead to damage or loss. In summary: empty, secure or remove, tighten screws, cushion, and strap down.

Hey Dikau, all I can say is: better to secure too much than too little ;-) Malm is reliable, but if the drawers fall out during transport, it’s no fun. I always remove the drawers completely and label them, so I know exactly where everything belongs. Then cover everything with furniture blankets and tighten it well with ratchet straps. If you do it properly, the Malm will arrive undamaged. Good luck with the move! 🙂

A common mistake is not securing drawers, which can quickly lead to damage or loss.I completely agree with that. Additionally, I recommend tightening screws firmly but without over-tightening – the material used in Malm furniture is mainly particle board, so caution is needed to avoid damaging the threads.
Also, during transport, make sure the furniture is kept as upright as possible. One side, such as the back panel, is often weaker and can crack if transported lying down.
For padding, furniture blankets with Velcro fasteners or stretch wrap work well because they fit tightly and prevent the padding from slipping.
A small tip: take photos beforehand to document how drawers and doors are assembled, which can save time during reassembly.
