Hello everyone, I am planning to redesign my Ikea Brimnes furniture using spray paint, but I am unsure which products are best suited for this. The surfaces of the Brimnes series are melamine-coated or have a slightly rough, matte finish, which is known to not accept or hold all paints equally well. My question is: Which spray paints are specifically suitable for furniture in this series to achieve a long-lasting, even, and well-adhering paint coverage? Are there special sprays that work well without the need for an intensive sanding process beforehand or that adhere optimally to melamine-coated surfaces? I am also interested in whether you have experience with certain brands and their spray paints, especially regarding scratch resistance and ease of application. I would appreciate any tips on preparation, priming, and possibly necessary intermediate sanding as well. Thank you very much in advance!

In general, for melamine-coated furniture, it is recommended to use special spray paints designed explicitly for plastic or laminate surfaces, as these adhere better. Products such as "Dupli-Color Plastic Adhesion Primer" provide a good adhesion primer that should be sprayed before applying the actual paint.

Afterwards, acrylic-based spray paints are suitable, as they usually create a flexible and durable surface.

It is important to thoroughly clean the surface before application and lightly sand it with fine-grit sandpaper (grit 240-320) to ensure good adhesion of the primer.

Also, keep in mind that the finish on matte surfaces will naturally not be as smooth as on glossy melamine surfaces.

As an addition:

Ikea Brimnes furniture typically consists of particleboard with a melamine coating. This makes it very resistant to moisture and abrasion, which also makes it difficult to repaint.

For spray paint, as PULAU explained, a plastic primer is recommended as a base. After that, you can use high-quality acrylic or polyurethane sprays, for example from brands like "Motip" or "Krylon."

These sprays are aromatic-free, dry quickly, and create a relatively scratch-resistant surface.

Most importantly, however, as PULAU describes, is the surface preparation: cleaning, light sanding, and keeping the surface dust-free.

I have a more nuanced view, as it is not only important which spray paints are used, but also to what extent the original surface texture may need to be altered.

This statement is fundamentally correct, but people often underestimate that melamine’s very smooth, chemically resistant surface does not always bond well with a primer.

Therefore, I would recommend applying a suitable adhesion promoter or bonding primer designed specifically for melamine or laminate before spraying. Otherwise, improper adhesion can quickly lead to chipping.

Additionally, lightly sanding the surface between coats is not only mechanically useful but also helps to slightly roughen the surface so that the paint can better penetrate and adhere.

Exactly.

My advice: Use a plastic primer first, then acrylic spray paint. Do not use regular paint on melamine-coated surfaces, as it will not adhere properly.
