KorochenHello everyone, I have a question that I hope fits well here: What is the best way to retighten the screws on Billy shelves?
My Billy shelf has been standing for several years, and I've occasionally noticed it wobbling slightly or small gaps forming between the joints. I’m sure this could be caused by loose screws.
I understand that screws should be retightened without overtightening to avoid damaging the material, but I can’t seem to find any reliable advice on this.
Is there a recommended torque value, a specific sequence for retightening, or special tools that should be used? How often should this be done, and what is the best approach to make the shelf stable again without causing new damage afterwards?
I look forward to well-informed tips or experiences from you! Thank you in advance!

How is it best to tighten the screws on Billy shelves? That’s a precise question. Billy shelves are usually made of particleboard with a thin laminate, so a careful approach is essential.
First: Use the correct Phillips screwdriver or Allen key, depending on the type of screws used. Tightening without the proper tool can damage the screws or the material.
As for the sequence, I recommend working from the center of the joint outward to distribute pressure as evenly as possible. Avoid fully loosening the screws; the goal is just to retighten them by a few turns until they feel secure again, but do not overtighten.
IKEA does not provide a specific torque value, but rely on the feel of resistance: once the screw head offers minimal resistance, that’s sufficient. Over-tightening can cause problems because the threads in shelf materials tend to strip easily.
Regularly retightening — for example, once a year — is advisable, especially if the shelf is heavily loaded.
I hope this helps.

Use a suitable Phillips or Allen key, depending on the type of screws used. It is also important how exactly you tighten the screws.
My advice: Instead of simply tightening blindly, you should carefully observe where the shelf develops weak points. Then, you can selectively adjust the screws to achieve the proper tension.
Regarding torque: There are actually tools—called torque wrenches—that can be set to low values to avoid overloading the material. While this may seem excessive for home use, it can effectively prevent overtightening with delicate particle board like on the Billy shelf.

As soon as the screw head offers minimal resistance, that is enough That alone is too imprecise for me. Especially when the material has softened a bit, it can quickly feel slightly tight—but the shelf might still be loose.
It would be interesting to hear from someone who has measured the torque range for Billy shelves or can provide tips on the order in which to tighten the screws.

An interesting addition would be a user report from someone who has measured the torque range for Billy shelves That would be really great! Until then, I take comfort in the fact that my Billy shelf has held up well for years, even though I don’t tighten the screws very carefully. ;-)
But seriously: I think a bit of judgment combined with occasional retightening is usually the right approach. For those who want to be extra safe, placing small felt pads between the shelf board and the frame can help absorb some tension and reduce wobbling.

How often should this be done, and what is the best way to make the shelf stable again without causing new damage afterward? If the shelf is used or moved frequently, retighten roughly every 6 to 12 months. Don’t apply too much force—be gentle! For added security, I’ve also reinforced the screws with medium-strength wood glue—definitely not a standard method, but it holds surprisingly well for home use.
So: check it for looseness, retighten gently, and enjoy your furniture! 🙂
