Hello everyone,

I am currently considering which Billy bookcases from IKEA are best suited for use both in an office and a living room. It is important to me that the shelves offer a certain level of flexibility, both in terms of dimensions and appearance, so that they do not look out of place in a professional setting but also feel cozy and homely. Which models or combinations do you know that manage this balance well? It would be great if you could also cover different color options, customization possibilities (e.g., doors, inserts), or maybe stability, as the shelves will be used not only for decoration but also for files and books.

Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

When choosing the right BILLY shelf, I think color and height are the most important factors. The classic white shelves look very clean and professional but can sometimes feel too sterile for a living room. For a more homely atmosphere, birch or dark brown options work better; they still look professional in an office but come across as warmer.

Also, the standard height of 202 cm (79 inches) is often too tall for living rooms, unless you have very high ceilings. I recommend the 106 cm (42 inches) version, which can also be used as a room divider or combined more easily with other furniture. Doors are useful if you want to neatly hide files in the office.

However, whether the BILLY shelves are stable enough for very heavy books or large binders is questionable. If you plan to store a lot of weight, you should consider additional reinforcements or support beams.

I agree with Linavin and would like to add: For a combined living and working area, I recommend the BILLY shelving unit in the "white lacquered" or "oak veneer" finish. These surfaces are neutral without being too cold and fit well into various interior styles.

The glass doors, which you can optionally purchase, are also practical. They provide a professional office look while protecting books from dust. This is especially effective in an open-plan living and office space, creating a tidy appearance.

Furthermore, IKEA offers the BILLY/BESTÅ shelving systems, which allow you to combine shelves flexibly and adapt them to the specific room conditions. For example, you can add base cabinets below or mix different heights, which makes sense for both office and living room areas.

I see it a bit differently 🙂 Tall shelves often create a really impressive look and fill the space well without appearing cheap. Of course, the ceiling height is a crucial factor.

I would recommend choosing finishes like "birch" or "oak stained" for the appearance, as these natural colors are very versatile and blend well into the living room but still look suitable for an office. For some coziness, a few open shelves with favorite books, plants, or decorations—which you can easily integrate with the unit—work great.

And when you need tidiness, the doors come into play. This way, you effectively get multiple styles in one shelving unit.

Oh, and my tip: If you need a lot of storage but still want a homely feel, you can combine shelving units with variable depths—this makes it both cozy and practical. Good luck 🙂

Tall shelves really provide that impressive look

You’re right, basically there is nothing against tall models as long as the ceiling height is sufficient. My hesitation comes from the fact that very tall shelves can sometimes be impractical to access, especially when fully stocked.

Regarding stability: I’ve also experienced with BILLY that shelves can sag under the weight of heavy binders when fully loaded. A tip would be to reinforce them with additional supports or metal brackets, especially in an office setting.

Glass doors that ... create an office-appropriate look

These doors are definitely an elegant solution, but they do come at an additional cost and are not what I’d call “flexible” in terms of quick modifications. Perhaps a combination of open and closed units is the best alternative – this allows for both a representative and functional use in both rooms.

I use the BILLY 40x28x202 in white with white doors. It fits neatly into the office and doesn’t interfere in the living room. It takes up little space and is sturdy enough for files. The doors help keep dust out and create a tidy appearance. Recommended.
