Esteban_ba10 Jan 2022 08:23Hello everyone, I am currently looking into whether there are any smart home functions or compatible smart upgrades available for the popular IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially dressers and wardrobes.
I am particularly interested in whether integrated lighting, automatic mechanisms, or other smart features can be retrofitted technically to work with systems like Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit.
Does anyone have experience with whether IKEA itself or third-party manufacturers offer suitable solutions? I am looking for an option that is as easy to implement as possible, without having to dive into the “smart home DIY” hobby, but still want to enjoy the convenience of modern smart home technology. Thanks in advance for any tips!

There are no standardized smart home functions specifically designed for the HEMNES series.
The best option is to use smart LED lights or motion sensors to illuminate the interior. Many users combine TRÅDFRI lamps with HEMNES cabinets to activate lighting when opening them.
Additionally, there are alternative third-party motion sensors that can be easily installed to enhance convenience.
Integration with Alexa or Google Home is achieved through the smart home system used, not through the furniture itself.

When retrofitting smart home functions into IKEA HEMNES furniture, the following should be noted:
- IKEA offers the TRÅDFRI smart lighting system, which can be integrated well into furniture, for example through smart LEDs or light strips.
- Specific mechanical automations (e.g., motorized drawers) are not included in the product range and, if needed, must be implemented using separate smart home hardware.
- Third-party providers offer modifiable components, such as magnetic sensors or motion detectors, which can be attached to the furniture to automate functions like lighting control.
- Smart home communication takes place via protocols such as Zigbee or Wi-Fi and is not directly controlled by the furniture itself but by the respective smart accessories.
Conclusion: HEMNES furniture is classic furniture without built-in smart home features; external components are required for smart functions.

You can upgrade with smart bulbs like IKEA TRÅDFRI, which can be well integrated into the furniture. However, that alone doesn’t make a piece of furniture a smart home product. IKEA actually doesn’t sell furniture with digital functions; they focus more on separate systems.
The idea of automatically opening drawers or something similar might still have to wait a few years because there simply isn’t (yet) enough demand.
But honestly, who really wants a fully automated shelving unit? The appeal of genuine furniture lies in craftsmanship and physical interaction, not just pressing buttons.

But honestly, who actually wants a fully automated shelf?I doubt that’s the right question. Smart living is precisely about increasing comfort and intelligently integrating functions.
The fact that IKEA itself does not offer smart home furniture yet actually shows how conservative or cautious the industry is.
However, there are now smart retrofit solutions available to upgrade furniture. Just because the HEMNES line doesn’t have smart home features today doesn’t mean we can’t expect that in a few years.
What’s important is that current furniture can be expanded with smart components to bridge the gap between traditional furniture making and digitalization.
