Hello everyone,

I have been wondering for some time: How effective is dust protection in KALLAX units with open compartments? I use the KALLAX shelving system for storage, mostly with various open compartments without doors or drawers. Despite an organized setup, I have noticed that dust tends to accumulate faster on the items stored in the open KALLAX sections.

I am curious if there are any specific design or material characteristics of the KALLAX that influence dust buildup in open compartments, either increasing or reducing it. Are there practical tips or effective methods to minimize dust in the open areas without having to add doors?

What are the experiences here in the forum? Are there differences in dust accumulation when using boxes, inserts, or even special surface treatments?

Thanks for your insights!

Hey Clint70, that’s a really interesting question!

I have several KALLAX shelves and often use the open compartments with different boxes and inserts. From my experience, dust does accumulate faster there compared to closed furniture, but depending on the type of boxes you use, you can control it quite well.

For example, I have boxes with lids that do a pretty good job of keeping dust out. Open compartments usually mean more air circulation, which makes it easier for dust to settle inside. But the good thing is: you can improve this a lot with the right accessories!

So try using fully closed boxes—they’re great at keeping dust away and still give you a good overview :-)

That is correct. Dust protection with open compartments is generally limited since there is no barrier against incoming air and airborne particles.

KALLAX shelves are based on an open design without built-in dust protection features. The surface is usually melamine-coated, which is easy to clean but does not provide additional protection against settled dust.

To minimize dust accumulation, it is recommended to:
- Use boxes with lids or closed fronts
- Clean surfaces regularly
- Place the shelving unit in locations with as little dust as possible

There is no material treatment or surface sealing on standard KALLAX units that effectively repels dust.

Hello Clint70,

I would like to add some basic considerations regarding dust protection in open compartments. The main issue here is that open compartments do not provide a physical barrier against dust infiltration.

The following solutions are recommended:
- Using clear boxes or baskets that fit into the compartment
- Applying dust protection films or covers (though these may not always be visually ideal)
- Regularly ventilating and dusting to maintain a clean environment

Also keep in mind that materials like textiles inside the boxes can attract dust themselves. Therefore, choose materials carefully and clean them more frequently if needed.

I hope this helps!

Exactly, that is the most important thing.

Otherwise, use boxes with lids. Installing doors yourself is complicated.

Open compartments are not protected from dust.

I fully agree. I was once curious whether static electricity from plastic surfaces in KALLAX units plays a role – this could attract additional dust.

From my research, the effect is minimal with KALLAX because the surface is quite smooth and made of melamine-coated wood, which generates little static electricity.

In summary:
- Open compartments collect more dust due to airflow
- The material does not cause significant additional dust attraction
- The best protection is using boxes or covers
