Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Malm dressers: the drawers sometimes suddenly open by themselves without being touched. This mainly happens when the dresser is placed on a slight incline or when a drawer is only slightly closed. It’s quite annoying because the drawers always pop open and sometimes even open partially again.

My question is: What practical options are there to prevent these Malm drawers from opening automatically? I’ve read about magnetic catches and non-slip mats, but I’m not sure what actually works or if there is, for example, an adjustment on the drawer itself that can be changed to increase resistance.

It’s important for me to find a solution that is easy to implement, preferably reversible, and does not require visible modifications. Has anyone had experience with this? Tips on effective tricks or specific IKEA accessories would also be great.

Thanks in advance!

That’s really annoying! I suspect the drawer slides are not perfectly balanced. Sometimes even a slight tilt on the floor, which you barely notice, is enough.

What I can recommend is trying to stick small rubber bumpers or anti-slip pads on the underside of the drawer fronts. This adds some friction without having to modify the furniture.

Also, from my own experience, slightly adjusting the drawer slides (simply fine-tuning them so they aren’t too smooth) often works wonders.

A little tip: closing the drawers with a gentle tap more often can also help them latch properly and not stay open.

Good luck! 🙂

Good morning,

I’m addressing this topic in a structured way because it comes up frequently.

1. Cause: Malm drawers are equipped with metal runners that move very smoothly, causing them to slide almost on their own.
2. Problem: A slight tilt in the room or on the floor can cause the drawer to open by itself.
3. Possible solutions:

a) Check the alignment of the dresser – even minimal slopes can be corrected using a spirit level.
b) Attach anti-slip material to the dresser’s feet.
c) Fix a small stopper made of felt or rubber inside the back of the drawer to gently slow the movement.
d) Special drawer locks (magnetic or mechanical), available from hardware stores, can prevent the drawer from sliding.

4. Readjusting the runners: Often, there are small screws that allow you to change the tension of the runners.

Conclusion: A combination of leveling and small aids usually provides the desired stability.

If you want, I can send you a brief guide on how to properly adjust the runners.

Regards!

The Malm drawers often have too little friction. If you place the dresser on a slope, the drawers will basically slide open on their own.

A tip: Stick felt pads under the front of the drawers. This creates some resistance against unintended movement.

The following factors are relevant for solving the problem:

- Physical conditions: floor slope, weight/load of the drawer
- Mechanical settings: play and adjustment of the metal drawer slides
- Additional elements: use of brakes, stoppers, magnets

The IKEA Malm system is designed to operate smoothly for easy handling. However, this can cause self-opening on slight inclines.

Possible measures:

1. Check the level using an accurate spirit level; if necessary, level the floor.
2. Adjust the drawer slides: some models have small screws that can increase resistance.
3. Attach felt or rubber bumpers to the back or underside of the drawer front.

Any intervention should be carried out expertly to avoid impairing the self-closing or soft-close functionality.

Additionally, verify whether the furniture is placed on a smooth floor; if so, using anti-slip mats under the feet is recommended.

Here is a simple tutorial on how to prevent Malm drawers from opening on their own:

Step 1: Check if the dresser is level. Use a spirit level.
Step 2: If the floor is uneven, place small wooden wedges or felt pads under the feet.
Step 3: Inspect the drawer slides at the top and bottom. They often have small adjustment screws for resistance.
Step 4: If there are no screws, you can attach small stoppers (e.g., made of rubber or silicone) inside the drawer to limit the sliding distance.
Step 5: If needed, install magnetic catches, which are affordable and easy to retrofit.

Tips:
- Make sure the stoppers are not too tight, as this can damage the drawer.
- Test each drawer individually after making adjustments.

Following these steps can significantly reduce the annoying self-opening of drawers. 🙂
