Hello everyone,

I recently bought the IKEA Brimnes chest of drawers and find the drawers quite practical and sturdy. However, I am wondering if there are alternative ways to use them beyond the typical storage of clothing or household items.

I am interested in ideas on how these drawers could be used in other areas, for example as a mobile storage solution for tools, plants, or even in creative DIY projects. Suggestions for repurposing, such as turning them into a seating option with storage or as modular building blocks for furniture, would also be welcome. It is important to me that the solution is either practical or visually appealing and can be implemented with minimal modifications.

Does anyone have experience or ideas along these lines? Thanks in advance!

I’ll look at this from a more controversial angle: Why should we use the IKEA Brimnes drawers for anything else when their classic function is already fully met? In my view, the trend to repurpose furniture often feels like a mental discard, a refusal to accept the original purpose.

That said, those who dare can create surprising things with Brimnes drawers. For example, the drawers could serve as mobile planters by lining them with a film and adding wheels. A small indoor garden on wheels—that’s something different.

Or simply as rolling storage boxes under the bed, which is often an underestimated storage space. Maybe more provocatively: just stack them randomly and add cushions to turn them into an improvised bench.

In short, I believe these boxes could be more than just dull furniture if you have enough imagination.

I use my Brimnes drawers to store DIY supplies. Conveniently, I attached casters to them. Now they are easy to move and basically function as mobile toolboxes.

It's quick to do and doesn't require major modifications.

A very interesting example that combines good functionality with simple modification. Allow me to approach the topic from a more technical perspective:

The IKEA Brimnes drawers are mainly made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a melamine coating, so they are quite sturdy, but the load capacity should not be exceeded.

If you want to make the drawers mobile (for example, as toolboxes on casters), it’s essential to choose lightweight, durable casters with at least 30 kg (66 lbs) load capacity and attach them to the sturdiest points under the drawer, often on the MDF frame beneath it. Rubber casters are ideal as they allow easy movement on smooth floors.

Alternatively, you might consider removing the drawer fronts and adding built-in compartments or dividers inside—to better organize items of different sizes. For DIY projects, I recommend precise measuring and, if necessary, pre-drilling mounting points to avoid splitting the material.

I would also like to know in which room or setting you plan to use the drawers differently—living room, workshop, hobby basement, or something else? That would be crucial for further advice.
