I have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA in my apartment and I am considering whether to use plastic bins or fabric bins for the individual compartments. I am particularly interested in which option is better in terms of durability, ease of maintenance, and long-term use.

Are plastic bins better for KALLAX than fabric bins? Are there differences in load capacity or handling that should be taken into account? Additionally, it would be interesting to know how the different materials affect the appearance and smell in the room. I look forward to your experiences and assessments!

The answer to this question mostly depends on your specific needs.

Plastic bins offer greater durability and are water-resistant, making them better suited for storing heavier or slightly damp items. They are also easier to clean since they can be wiped down with a damp cloth. The look is more modern but can feel less cozy than fabric.

Fabric bins, on the other hand, are lighter and more flexible. They can be folded and contribute to a homelier atmosphere. However, they are less sturdy and may wear out faster with frequent use. Cleaning stains can also be more time-consuming.

Regarding odor, plastic is generally odorless or at least does not retain any lasting smells, whereas fabric bins may develop odors, especially when new or if they absorb moisture.

My recommendation: For long-lasting, practical use, plastic bins are advantageous, while fabric bins are more decorative and lightweight. Ultimately, it depends on your intended use.

Are plastic baskets better than fabric baskets for KALLAX? Are there differences in load capacity or handling that should be considered?

Here is a structured overview for you:

1. Material and Load Capacity:
- Plastic baskets are generally more rigid and can hold heavier items without losing their shape.
- Fabric baskets are soft and flexible but have limited load capacity due to the material, usually intended for lighter items.

2. Maintenance:
- Plastic is easy to clean with a damp cloth.
- Fabric can be machine washed, but this is more effort and the material wears out faster.

3. Appearance and Odor:
- Fabric baskets have a homelier feel and fit better in cozy settings.
- Plastic looks more modern but is often less inviting.
- Plastic may emit an unpleasant odor when heated, but this usually disappears after a short time.

4. Practical Handling:
- Plastic baskets always retain their shape.
- Fabric baskets can be folded, which can be an advantage for transport or storage.

Summary:
If you want to store heavy items or expect moisture, I clearly recommend plastic baskets. For light items and a cozier atmosphere, fabric baskets are more pleasant.

Also, pay attention to the exact dimensions, as there can be differences in how well the baskets fit.

That’s a valid point I’d like to add. For some people, it’s important that the baskets can be quickly stored away in summer or when moving.

I personally use fabric baskets in my KALLAX unit, mainly because they are very breathable and ideal for lightly stored textiles like knitwear or clothing. They don’t develop unpleasant smells if properly aired.

I agree with that. However, if you plan to store items sensitive to moisture and want to be able to wipe down the shelf occasionally, I would recommend plastic. Fabric also tends to develop a musty odor when damp.

In conclusion, the choice depends largely on the intended use. For long-term use in a dry environment and for lightweight items, fabric baskets work great. If you need full water resistance and durability, plastic is the better option.
