ᐅ What tips are there for making Ikea BESTA drawers easier to open and close?

latarHello everyone,
I have a small but annoying issue with my Ikea BESTÅ drawers. They no longer open and close as smoothly as they did at first. Often, I have to use quite a bit of force or pull and push several times before the drawer is fully open or closed.
I’m interested in any tips you might have to make opening and closing these drawers easier.
Are there adjustment options that can be fine-tuned? Or special lubricants or cleaning methods that can restore smooth movement to the runners or tracks? Maybe someone knows tricks to optimize the sliding mechanism without much effort, so the drawers can be used smoothly again.
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello latar,
I am very familiar with this issue – it often occurs with BESTÅ drawers due to either dirty or dry sliding mechanisms or misaligned drawer fronts that can cause some sticking.
First, I would recommend carefully cleaning the drawer slides with a dry cloth to remove dust and larger debris. After that, using a special lubricant for slides, such as silicone spray, often helps since it is non-sticky and does not attract dust.
It is important to apply the lubricant sparingly and remove any excess to prevent additional dirt from sticking later on.
Also, check if the drawer is properly aligned and not rubbing sideways. You can adjust the front panel slightly at the top and bottom using the small adjustment mechanism so the drawer doesn’t scrape against the opening.
This should already improve things a lot. If the slide rails are damaged, replacement parts might be necessary, but usually, a thorough cleaning and some lubricant are enough.

Hello latar,
I would like to share some detailed tips to help you optimize your BESTÅ drawers.
First of all: The runners in the BESTÅ series are made of metal with plastic gliders, which can wear down over time due to friction from regular use. This usually shows as jerky movements or increased resistance.
Step 1 is to thoroughly clean the rails. It’s best to use household alcohol or isopropanol to remove grease and dirt residues. Make sure to treat the plastic gliders with a lint-free cloth.
Step 2: Lubrication. Avoid WD-40 or oil-based products that attract dirt. Silicone-based sprays or thick PTFE greases work better and can be found at hardware stores.
Step 3: Remove the drawer and check the guides for proper fit. If one side is a bit loose or the plastic glider is broken, this causes friction. You can also install the runners with minimal play and, if necessary, replace the metal guides if they are bent.
Step 4: Make sure the drawer front is properly aligned. A slight misalignment often causes sticking when opening and closing. Use the adjustment screws on the sides and top to precisely position the front.
Recently, I made an additional improvement by adding a thin layer of foam padding under the sides of the drawers, which helped them slide smoother inside the cabinet. Of course, any modification should be done carefully, but this noticeably reduces friction.
What exactly do your drawers look like? You probably have the white or black version? Have you removed the rails before? Details like these help to plan a targeted solution.

I have the white BESTÅ drawers, and the slides are metal with white plastic parts. I haven’t removed the rails yet because I’m worried it might cause more problems than benefits.
But your tips about cleaning with isopropanol and silicone spray sound very promising.
What do you recommend as the best way to access the slides without fully removing them? Is it possible to partially pull out the drawers to expose the metal runners and then clean them?
You don’t want to damage anything, after all, since the aim is for everything to work better for a long time.

What do you recommend as the best way to access the rails without having to remove them completely?Hello latar,
you can usually pull the drawers in BESTÅ almost all the way out and then gently push or pull them up or down to unhook them from the runners. This way, you get better access to the rails and can clean the plastic glides thoroughly with a lint-free cloth and isopropanol.
Regarding lubrication: apply silicone oil and then carefully move the drawer back and forth a few times so the lubricant spreads evenly.
If you’re unsure, take your time and avoid forcing anything—the system is modular and works well with a little care.
If you like, I can also provide a step-by-step guide on the best way to remove and reinstall the drawers.
Hey latar and everyone else here 😊
I think BESTÅ drawers have their own unique character – sometimes a bit stubborn, but with a little care, they can glide smoothly like butter again.
A simple trick I use: gently rub the plastic gliders with a pencil eraser if they feel a bit rough. This smooths out small irregularities.
Then, apply some silicone spray, and everything runs like clockwork.
And a quick tip on the side: it’s worth tightening all the screws on the drawer fronts. If they loosen, it can cause significant tension and friction.
In the world of BESTÅ drawers, this can sometimes be the difference between a "hard pull" and a "smooth glide" 😉.
